Reunion & Recognition of 1991-92 Men’s Basketball Team – Jan. 6-7, 2017

1991-92 Cajuns Get Together for Reunion – From the Bird’s Nest by Jay Walker Jan. 6, 2017

ESPN 1420 Sports Radio jay@espn1420.com

The 1991-92 Ragin’ Cajuns basketball team, the last to win an NCAA Tournament game, got together last night at Schilling Distributing for a social prior to tonight’s game against ULM. The team will be honored publicly at halftime tonight.

Coach Bob Marlin presented the players with commemorative mini-basketballs highlighting the teams achievements. The game against Oklahoma, won by the Cajuns, 87-83, was shown on the big screen.

Seven of the 15 that were on the USL roster were able to attend. At least two more (Carroll Boudreaux and Cedric Mackyeon) are expected to be on hand tonight. Trainer Jaime Perez was there. So were two student managers, Michael Richardson and Chance Babin (one drove in from Georgia just for the weekend.)

Eric Mouton and Byron Starks both had games postponed because of the weather. They were on hand last night. Todd Hill was there with his whole family. Russ Harris didn’t bring his family, but he had pictures to show. Tyrone “Bucket” Jones was there. He got the best dressed award, rockin’ a bow tie.

Bobby Thigpen came in from Dallas and, in a pleasant surprise, brought former Cajuns receiver Wayde Butler with him. Wayde got Brian Mitchell on the phone and I got to remind B. Mitch that HE is following in MY footsteps as a sports talk show host.

Ashley Landers wouldn’t let his physical ailments prevent him from coming in from Georgia. I asked him if he still ate oatmeal every morning. He said yes…and was surprised I remembered.

We know we’ll miss Marcus Stokes and Michael Allen this weekend. Both are coaching basketball out of state and are unable to attend.

We’ll miss Tony Moore, taken from us too soon. But we watched him hit THE SHOT that put the Cajuns ahead for good against Oklahoma.

Hope we’ll see you tonight at the game. In the meantime, enjoy some pics from last night.
