Home Phone: -- Feb 2019 Xavier, a graduate of Port Arthur (TX) Thomas Jefferson High School, played for the Cajuns under Brad Kelley and Gene Shell. Upon being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays after his Junior season (1986), Hernandez began a professional playing career that spanned 14 seasons, including 10 years in the Major Leagues. His time in the big leagues included stints with the Blue Jays, the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers. He compiled a career record of 40-35 with 35 saves and a 3.90 ERA. His best year came with the Astros during the 1992 season when he went 9-1 with a 2.11 ERA in 77 games. When his playing days ended in 1999, he began coaching for Houston Baptist University while continuing his education. He earned dual degrees in Psychology and Sociology from HBU in the Spring of 2001. Hernandez is married to the former Deborah Breaux (USL ’88), and they have four children; Danielle Marie, Michael Xavier (married to the former Kara Fritz), Sarah Elizabeth, Stephen Joseph and four grandchildren, Lincoln Xavier, Ava Sarah, Mickey Armando and Nolan Michael Hernandez. They reside in Sugar Land, Texas
