Hernandez is entering his ninth year coaching collegiate baseball at Houston Baptist University after serving as a Minor League Pitching Coach for the Tampa Bay Rays for 9 years (2002-2010).

Xavier, a graduate of Port Arthur (TX) Thomas Jefferson High School, played for the Cajuns under Brad Kelley and Gene Shell. Upon being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays after his Junior season (1986), Hernandez began a professional playing career that spanned 14 seasons, including 10 years in the Major Leagues. His time in the big leagues included stints with the Blue Jays, the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds and Texas Rangers. When his playing days ended in 1999, he began coaching for Houston Baptist University while continuing his education. He earned dual degrees in Psychology and Sociology from HBU in the Spring of 2001.
