Lafayette – Wiltz Paul Champagne, Jr., 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, May 4, 2018, at Brookdale Senior Living in Lafayette.

Visitation will be observed on Sunday, May 6, 2018, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette.

A private entombment will follow at a later date in Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette.

Wiltz was born August 10, 1938, in Lafayette to Wiltz Paul Champagne, Sr. and Ita Marie Labbe Champagne and was a lifetime resident of Acadiana. He graduated from Cathedral Carmel High School and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (formerly USL) and received a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Texas. Wiltz worked for UL for 30 years as a Registrar and later, as Dean of Admissions.

Wiltz is survived by his two daughters, Anne Marie Gaudin and her husband, Steve of Baton Rouge and Jennifer LeMeunier and her husband, Nock of Lafayette; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Kendall and Stephen Gaudin and Graham, Jacob, John and Christopher LeMeunier and numerous dear nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Catherine Sanford Champagne; his parents; four sisters, Marguerite Dailey, Olga Leblanc, Hazel Miller and Audrey Bernard and his grandson, Sean Michael Gaudin.

Wiltz was very grateful and appreciative of the care and companionship given to him by the caregivers, staff and residents at Brookdale Senior Living, who went above and beyond to care for him the last three years. They patiently listened to his occasionally lewd stories, snuck him ice cream, coffee and chocolate and tolerated his expansive puzzle collection which eventually took over his “library” at Brookdale.

Wiltz asked that in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the “Wiltz and Catherine Champagne Education Endowment” that he started for music education students at UL. Mail to the attention of Jill Duhon at UL Lafayette Foundation, P.O. Box 44290, Lafayette, LA 70504.
