Cajuns Notebook: Walk-on continues family legacy at UL

Joshua Parrott jparrott@theadvertiser.com August 11, 2009

After graduating from St. Thomas More last spring, Will Stevenson decided to enroll at UL.

The move should come as no surprise. In a way, its a family tradition.

Stevenson, a walk-on for the football team, represents the fifth generation of his family to attend the school. His great-great-great grandfather, William Stevenson, graduated from UL and taught physical education there. His great-great grandfather, grandfather and dad were also students at the school, he said.

His great-great grandfather, William Stevenson Jr., lettered for the football team in 1937 and 38.

Coming here was a foregone conclusion, said the youngest Stevenson. This was where I always wanted to go. No matter what, I was coming here.

Stevenson is listed as a linebacker on the official fall camp roster. Last week was the first for the teams fall practices, and the 5-foot-11, 210-pounder was excited about the opportunity.

I love it, Stevenson said. Its awesome. This is what Ive always dreamed of and always wanted to do.

Walk-ons usually face an upward road to earn a scholarship, but its happened plenty of times in the past at UL. Lanier Coleman eventually got on scholarship and was a starter at defensive tackle as a senior in 2008.

Senior center Chris Fisher, a former STM standout, was once a walk-on. Now he is an All-Sun Belt Conference player and on the watch lists for the Rimington (nations top center) and Lombardi (top lineman or linebacker) awards.

Thats my plan, Stevenson said of becoming a scholarship player. I want to work my way up. Im going to do the best I can to make that happen.

GETTING PHYSICAL

Mondays practice was the second of fall camp in shoulder pads and helmets (shells). The intensity was easily felt on the sidelines during the workout.

It was real intense early, UL head coach Rickey Bustle said. You can see it picking up. The guys want to get after each other.

The Cajuns will get to do that today as they put on full pads for the first time this fall.

ODDS AND ENDS

UL added another player to the roster on Monday in Hammond native Matt Gore, a deep-snapper who played at St. Thomas Aquinas Phillip Walker, a senior, has moved from fullback to linebacker, running backs coach Justin Lustig told theadvertiser.com after Mondays practice Nate Douglas, a sophomore defensive end, did not practice Monday for reasons unknown. The Florida native led the teams defensive linemen last season in tackles (26) and tackles for loss (6.0).
