Lafayette – Funeral services will be held at an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 2, 2002, in Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for William Francis Stevenson, Sr., 86, who died at 3:15 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 at Lafayette General Medical Center.

Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lafayette.

Monsignor Glenn Provost, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Lafayette will be celebrant of the Mass and will conduct the funeral services.

Mr. Stevenson, son of the late Francis Smith Stevenson and the former Mary Alice Naff, was a native of Bastrop. He served his country during World War II as a naval officer in the European Theater. While attending SLI, Mr. Stevenson was deeply involved in athletics and was a standout football player. He worked as a professor of physical education at USL (SLI) from 1939 until his retirement in 1975.

Mr. Stevenson was a high school and college football referee for years. He also was a past member of the Lions Club and the Beaver Club. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Mr. Stevenson was a lifelong sportsman who enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, and grafting of Camellias.

Survisors include one daughter, Ellen S. Hebert, and her husband, Bobby, of Rising Star, Texas; one son, William F. Stevenson, Jr., and his wife of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Dr. Chris Hayes and her husband, Dr. Eric Hayes; William Francis Stevenson, III and his wife Stephanie; Cal Stevenson and his wife; Melissa; Douglas Hebert and Emily Faust and her husband, Jody; and seven great grandchildren, Sean, Allison, and Katherine Hayes, William Francis Stevenson IV, Andrew and Matthew Stevenson and Owen Hebert.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife , Rita Motty Stevenson, and one brother, Warren Everett Stevenson.

Visiting hours will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be William Francis Stevenson III, Cal M. Stevenson, Douglas Hebert, Bobby David Hebert, Dr. Erik A. Hayes, and James A. Stevenson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Foundation and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Foundation in Mr. Stevenson’s name.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, is in charge of all funeral arrangements.
