Bill entered Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1947. He was a middle distance runner on the 1948-1950 track teams. Bill was Conference mile run champion each of those years. He competed successfully in the 880 yd. run and on the mile relay as well and ran all three events in most track meets. Along with Dr. David Fisher, Bill was co-captain of the 1948-1950 teams. His participation in track ended in 1950 when he entered military service. He was permitted to return to Southwestern in 1952 and completed his B.S. degree in Agriculture. However, his final year of eligibility in track was lost. That year he married Helen Fontenot who completed her B.A. degree in Liberal Arts at Southwestern in 1952. After military service Bill earned his M.S. degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Management at Louisiana State University. Subsequently, he worked for a Houston, Texas based oil company and state and federal conservation agencies. He returned to college in 1969 and earned his Ph.D. degree in Wildlife Sciences at Texas A&M University. He became a Research Associate and Assistant Professor at A&M, then a private resource management consultant until his retirement in 1996. Today, Bill and Helen live in College Station, Texas. They have three grown children and four grand children. He was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999.
