Home Phone: -- Dr. Walter Paul Kessinger Jr. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 2:00 in the small chapel of First Baptist Church of Lafayette for Dr. Walter Paul Kessinger, Jr., who passed away at the age of 83 Monday, April 14, 2014 in Lafayette. Rev. Luther Burney will officiate. Paul was born on July 9, 1930 in Corsicana, Texas, to Walter Paul Kessinger, Sr. and Dollie Cleo Renfrow. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1947. He attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1951 and a Master’s Degree in Geology in 1953. In 1974, Paul received a PhD in Geology from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Paul resided in Lafayette since 1953, when he came to work as an assistant professor at Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Paul was a Professor of Geology at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now ULL) until he retired in 1986 as the Head of the Geology Department. Paul was married to the former Dorothy Elizabeth Wallis from September 1, 1962 until her death on August 16, 2012. Paul was a caring and loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed. Paul is survived by his three children: two sons, Walter Paul Kessinger, III and his wife, Cynthia, of The Woodlands, TX, Charles Hugh Kessinger and his wife, Locadia, of Lafayette, LA, one daughter, Linda Kathryn Kessinger Hill and her husband, Gordon, of Fairbanks, AK, ten grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister, June Kessinger Wells. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, affectionately known as ‘Dot’ or ‘Dotsy,’ his parents, his brother-in-law, John Wells, his brother-in-law, Hugh Creighton Wallis and his wife Beth Stubblefield Wallis, his sister-in law, Virginia Wallis Hagelin and her husband John Hagelin, and his sister-in law, Kathryn (Midge) Wallis. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Joseph Hospice and Cornerstone Village South Nursing Home for the compassionate care given to Paul and his family. Special thanks to the nursing staff of the 3rd floor at Lafayette General Medical Center for their professional and compassionate care during his last days.
