Home Phone: -- Obituary: Walter Robert Groth BROUSSARD – Walter was born July 25, 1924 in Elton, Louisiana. He died peacefully on September 21, 2011, at his residence surrounded by his family. A Memorial Service will be held on September 24, 2011, at 2 pm at the First Baptist Church in Broussard, LA located at 210 S. Morgan Avenue, Broussard, LA. Following his graduation from Elton High School he attended United States Military at West Point Academy. He served in the South Pacific in the artillery division in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946, earning the rank of Captain. Following this tour of duty, he returned to Louisiana graduating from SLI in 1950, with a BS in Agronomy, where he was a proud member and letterman on the basketball and baseball teams. Following his graduation from SLI, he was redeployed during the Korean Conflict to Germany where he served 1951 through 1954. When the war ended, Walter went to work for Camco, Inc. in Houston, TX marking the beginning of a long and rewarding oil field career. Over the years he was employed with Otis Engineering, Dresser Guiberson, Brown Oil Tools, Edwards Rental and Fishing Tools, and retired from Gulf Coast Rental Tools in 1992. He met and worked with many folks who have remained friends to this day. Golf was his favored past time. He was past member and president of Oakbourne Country Club. He was also an active member of Petroleum Club, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and LAGCOE. In 2007, Walter was selected to go to the Honor Air trip to Washington, D.C. He was very proud and thought it an honor to have participated. Following that trip, he was interviewed by the New Orleans World War II museum and reflections of his experience were made a part of the exhibits at the museum. Walter was preceded in death by his father, Fred Robert Groth, his mother, Lora Bell Groth, and his brother, Charles Fred Groth. Surviving members of his family are his wife of 22 years Joy McClelland Groth, his children: Anna Burdick and her husband, Edward of Canyon Lake, TX, their children, Patrick Burdick, and his wife, Kari of Houston, TX, Kyle Burdick, and his wife Brittney of Beaumont, TX, Lou Groth and his wife, Carol of Lafayette, LA and their children, Heather and Lane Moore of Canberra, Australia and Jacob Groth of Jackson, MS, Hayden and Debra Groth of Brookeland, TX, Teri Groth Crawford and her children, Hayden and Lauren Crawford of Lafayette, LA, Jeff McClelland, and his wife Diane of Broussard, LA and their children Jacob, Garrett, and Amy McClelland, Jim McClelland and his wife, Candy and their children Nicholas, and Justin McClelland, Jeanne McClelland and her children Jennifer and Charles Dischler, and Jan Nevils. He also enjoyed his 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. His nieces and nephews are Gayle Groth Fontenot of Hathaway, LA., Joan Miner of San Antonio, Robert Groth of Lake Charles, and Most Reverend Ronald Charles Groth of Lake Charles and their children. He lived his life as a caring, loving man with principles and values that he believed in deeply. His dry wit will be cherished by many. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Groth’s name to First Baptist Church of Broussard Priority Fund.
