VJ Edney DOD Feb. 26, 1989
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for VJ Edney, 78, who died at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at Lafayette Guest House West.
The Rev. Ira Robinson, pastor of First United Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. Larry Maxwell, associate pastor, will officiate. Several musical selections will be sung by the church choir.
Burial will be at Lafayette Memorial Park and Mausoleum.
Mr. Edney, son of the late Fred Edney and the former Arrie Dalton, was a native of Henderson, N.C., and was a Lafayette resident for 42 years.
He was a professor of physical education, having worked for the University of Southwestern Louisiana from 1946 until his retirement in 1975.
He received his B.S. degree in education from Georgetown (KY.) University 1937 and a Masters in Education from the University of Kentucky in 1940.
He served as the head coach of Auburn University’s basketball and baseball programs in 1945. He was a sponsor of the HPE Majors Club at USL for many years and was a member of the Lafayette Football Officials Association.
Survivors include three brothers, Thomas Curt, Lehren, and Lewis Edney of Birmingham, Ala; two sisters, Ruth Welsh of Dallas, Texas and Belle Rigsby of Birminham, Ala., two sons, Frederick Morgan Edney of San Diego, Calif., and Vernon James “Jim” Edney of Duson; a daughter, Janet Helm of Houston; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mabel Morgan.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Edney, Lehren Edney, Lewis Edney, Roy Welsh, Howard Rigsby, and Doug Edney.
Visiting hours will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday.
Delhomme Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
