Football: DE Wilson joins Cajun fooball team

Joshua Parrott jparrott@theadvertiser.com August 2, 2008

Trace Wilson wanted a chance to come back to Louisiana and play Division I football.

He will realize both of those dreams at UL.

Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound defensive end from El Dorado High School in Placentia, Calif., confirmed with The Daily Advertiser on Friday that he will join the Ragin’ Cajuns for the 2008 season. The Metairie native, who had registered to play at Santa Ana (Calif.) Community College, is expected to report Sunday for the start of UL’s preseason camp.

“It is a great feeling,” said Wilson, who spent this week at his grandparent’s home in Metairie. “It’s a dream come true and the best feeling in the world. I loved it out here and really missed it. I really wanted to come back.

“(UL) is the perfect fit.”

This will be a homecoming of sorts for Wilson, whose father, Dave Wilson, played quarterback for the New Orleans Saints from 1981-88. After being born in Metairie, Wilson lived in California until his parents divorced in 1995. He attended Brother Martin High School in New Orleans for the eighth and ninth grade before moving to Orange County in the summer of 2005 to live with his father.

Wilson helped lead El Dorado to the Century League and California Interscholastic Federation Southwest Division titles and a 13-1 record each of the past two seasons.

As a senior, he was a first team all-CIF Southwest Division pick and earned second team all-county honors despite playing out of position at defensive tackle. He finished second on the team with 15 sacks and fifth with 73 tackles for a defense that allowed an average of 8.9 points per game.

Last season, Wilson logged three sacks against Dana Hills and El Toro and two against El Modena and South Hills and recorded a sack in the Orange County North-South All-Star game earlier this month.

Wilson, noted for his work ethic and technique, is expected to move back to defensive end in college. He said Cajun coaches told him to be ready to contribute this season as UL looks to rebound from a 3-9 season.

El Dorado coach Jeff Bailey first realized how talented Wilson was when he intercepted three passes and returned them all for touchdowns as a sophomore defensive end on the junior-varsity team.

“Trace is an outside guy who has great instincts,” Bailey said. “He’s an unbelievable kid and has a really good sense for the ball. His weight was down to 230 at the end of last season, but I saw him the other day and he looked much bigger than that now.”

SMU, Idaho State and Weber State also showed interested in Wilson, but the Cajuns made a late push and got his commitment after an on-campus visit last week.

“I think this is the perfect fit for him,” Bailey said of UL. “He’s in heaven right now. He gets to go home to Louisiana and play football. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Wilson is the second player to make a last-minute commitment to join the Cajuns in 2008. On Wednesday, running back Yobes Walker from Brazoswood High outside of Houston told The Advertiser he would report to campus on Sunday.

The Cajuns open the season on Aug. 30 against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss.
