For coach Tony Courville, that feeling of being around the Carencro High football program in the glory years of the 1990s certainly fits that bill. Courville began his high school coaching career in 1989 with the Golden Bears and coached there through two trips to the Superdome Classic before accepting his first head coaching gig at Opelousas High in 1997. After two more decades as assistant at Kaplan, Carencro and Teurlings Catholic since then, Courville couldn’t resist applying for the head coach opening with the Golden Bears after Rip Eveland’s retirement. Even better, he got the job, returning to Carencro with hopes of reliving past successes. “I’m very excited about this opportunity,” the 57-year-old Courville said. “Unlike the last time (OHS in 1997), I’m walking into a great situation. You couldn’t ask for a better situation. Not only is it a program with a winning tradition, but one that’s really riding a wave right now.” Under Eveland, Carencro won the district title in 2014 and 2015, before reaching the state quarterfinals this past fall. Courville naturally knows a great deal about these Bears, coaching against Carencro as an assistant at Teurlings for the past nine seasons. “I went back and reviewed my scouting reports on Carencro,” Courville said. “They might lack a little depth on the offensive line, but there’s still speed all over the place.” Perhaps the biggest thing Courville knows is that the current coaching staff is more than qualified. Having coached several members of the current staff in Kevin Faulk, Stephen Barrett, Derrick Franchak and Joey Dwyer, he expects a smooth transition. “Kevin was the hard-working player I ever coached and that has definitely transferred to his coaching career,” Courville said. “I’ve been knowing him since he was 14.” Courville’s expertise has always been in special teams and on defense, but he said he hasn’t reached any conclusions on new coaching assignments or scheme changes, because Eveland will remain at Carencro and Courville at Comeaux High until the end of the school year. Athletic Network Footnote by Dr. Ed Dugas: When Tony Courville dropped his son Michael off in Shreveport on Wednesday to compete in the LHSCA All-Star Football game to be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at Independence Stadium, he was an awfully proud poppa, just like any father would be. Only Courville isn’t actually your normal dear old All-Star dad. He was coaching high school football since before Michael was even born and was actually his position coach this past season at Teurlings Catholic. But while he may have a different perspective about the road that his son took reach Saturday’s All-Star Game that features the top performers in the state, Tony Courville couldn’t find his natural reaction. “Really, I felt like any father would,†Tony Courville said. “I’m extremely happy for him and extremely proud of him. He’s worked very hard. Being a coach’s son, he always wanted to do things on his own. He always worked a little extra to show that he earned everything he got.†In so many ways, this weekend’s All-Star game is a culmination of that journey that Tony and Michael have been on since his first pee wee game. Unlike so many other players, Michael’s rides home from practice was often about football. Michael’s TV watching after practice was often watching film with dad on a projection screen TV. “He was the typical coach’s son I guess,†Tony Courville said. “He was a very smart player. He would ask me questions that I didn’t ask when I was his age.†All of that extra time also gave the two head-strong football minds plenty of occasion to argue philosophies and theories about the gameplan or the game in general. “I always told him that the coach is always going to win,†laughed Tony Courville, who leaned on Teurlings head coach Sonny Charpentier, who had plenty of experience coaching his sons. “He (Charpentier) said the biggest thing is to separate the two (dad and coach), which is the hardest thing to do,†Tony Courville said. “It’s hard.†But while there are obstacles, both cherished the experience that so few coaches and players enjoy. “It’s been a lot of fun to have my dad with me,†Michael Courville said. “I always felt comfortable with him. We’d butt heads every once in a while, because we’re both hard-headed, but it was a great experience.†Courville said his father naturally gave him countless amount of pointers over the years, especially this past season as his position coach, but there’s a few big-picture tidbits of advice that really had an impact. “The biggest things he always told me were to always be aggressive, to never have a fear of failure, never be afraid of messing up,†the star linebacker said. “Overall, I think I did well (in high school career), especially when you consider the level of competition we played against. We played against some really good team. (Sophomore season) It seemed like we were playing against a Division I signee every week.†Courville said he looks forward to being teammates with athletes that were among the Rebels’ biggest rivals. For instance, among the other 14 area players on the West roster, 10 played against Teurlings during Courville’s career, including three from Notre Dame and two from Breaux Bridge. “It’s going to be a little different, but none of those guys have ever done anything personally to me. I’m looking forward to getting to know them.†Once this All-Star experience is up, the next decision for Courville is where to attend college – likely deciding between a scholarship at a smaller school in Arkansas and being a walk-on at a Division I school close to home.
