September 05, 2006 – Golfer continues trend in even-numbered years

The rest of the field in the Lafayette City Golf Championships should have known better. After all, it is an even-numbered year.
Just like every other even year since 2000, Todd Weber claimed the city’s amateur title Monday. But even he was surprised at the margin.

Weber added a 2-under 70 at The Wetlands to his 3-under 69s at both Hebert Municipal and Les Vieux Chenes over the weekend, and his three-day score of 8-under 208 was a whopping 15 shots better than the 35-player field.

“You take them when they come your way,” Weber said. “I made some good putts and hit some good shots.”
Apparently, he hit a lot of those. Larry Woods and brother Ted Weber were the closest competitors at 7-over 223 and won a close battle for second with David Duhon (225) and Mike Meadows (226).

“He’s hitting his driver long and straight,” Ted said after his brother’s fifth city title, “and he’s making all his par putts when he has them. That’s the difference in him and the rest of us right now.”

Todd Weber entered Monday’s final round at the new Wetlands facility with a nine-shot lead over Duhon, but struggled with bogeys on three of the first four holes. However, he made a tough par save with a 10-foot putt on the par-four fifth hole and didn’t make another bogey the rest of the way.

Birdies at seven, 10 – on a sliding 30-foot putt – and 12 pretty much put the tournament out of reach, and he didn’t even need his chip-in eagle at the par-five 14th.

“The putt at five helped me settle down,” he said. “It was one of those that if I missed it, it could have gotten ugly.”

“The rest of us (in his group) were even there,” Ted Weber said, “and it looked like maybe we had an outside shot at getting back in it.”

Woods claimed the net title with a 207, just ahead of a group that included Jody Lormand and Avery Castille, while John Broussard (231) won the senior flight and Paul Rushing’s 216 won senior net honors.
