Home Phone: -- Prisoner of War in WWII. * * * * * * * * * Roanoke Times, The (VA) – Wednesday, September 13, 2000 GAGNET, Thomas Rupert, (Tom), of Salem, Va., went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 10, 2000. He was a very loving and caring husband, father and grandfather and he will be sadly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeanette and Gaston Gagnet . His wife, Sylvia “Sue” Gagnet ; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas, Jr. and Ann Gagnet of Moneta, Va. and Michael and Nita Gagnet of Salem, Va., survived him. Three grandchildren, Amber Gagnet , Samantha Gagnet and Bryan Gagnet also survived him. Tom was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Salem. Tom was inducted into the Army on May 27, 1941. He fought in the Philippines on Bataan and Corregidor. The Japanese captured him when Corregidor fell on May 6, 1942. He remained a prisoner of the Japanese until the end of the war. Tom received several military honors, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. In 1949, Tom became a teacher with the Roanoke City Schools. He became principal of Highland Park Elementary School in 1957. He remained at Highland Park until his retirement in 1979. Tom served as president of the Roanoke City Teachers Association, was chairman of the Roanoke City and District P Elementary Principals and was chairman of the Roanoke Board of Principals and Supervisors. He was a member and chaired the salary committees of those organizations and was a member of the Board of the Roanoke Valley FCU for 38 years. Tom was president or treasurer of the Roanoke Valley FCU for many years and served as member and president of the Mental Health Association. Tom joined the Disabled American Veterans in 1949 as a life member. He went through all the chairs and served as treasurer for many years. He was a member and past commander of the American Ex-Prisoners of War. He is also a member of the American Legion, AmVets, VFW, and Blinded Veterans as well as the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor. Tom was past president of the Roanoke Valley Veterans Council in 1973. He was Father of the Year in Youth Leadership in 1977 and he received the key to the City of Roanoke for outstanding leadership in education in 1983. He received the national George H. Seal Award at the Los Angeles convention of the Disabled American Veterans for outstanding volunteer work. He served as DAV-VAVS representative at the Salem VAMC since 1983 and as chairman of the VAVS executive committee. Tom recently received his 50 year award for service to the DAV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the organization you shared with Tom. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at Lotz Salem Chapel with interment to follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 12, 2000 at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem.
