Bobby Banna’s Living Memorial, Terry Ott – Baseball 1970 & 71

I came to USL in the fall of 1969 and was a member of the 1970 and 1971 baseball teams. I was injured in 1971 so that season was shortened for me.

I believe I was one of two out-of-state players on the team. Mike Sturgeon was from Kentucky and I was from Texas. I knew no one on the team personally or by reputation but I was welcomed and accepted and I believe that the atmosphere that coach Banna had created and the respect he had from his players had a great deal to do with the camaraderie I experienced.

Though I was there only a short time Coach Banna influenced my attitude and approach to life in that he mirrored what I had learned from my parents and family-that preparation, work and giving your best effort were the keys to developing character and value. I try to remain committed to these values each day.

On the field coach was fair, demanding, and passionate about individual and team effort. I believe that his attitude and his efforts to instill that attitude in us were responsible for the resurgence of USL baseball which I believe started with the 1968-1973 teams.

Off the field it was clear that he was a man of faith and commitment to his family and his work.

My second year I was injured and my teammate Chip Sanches took me to the infirmary. Other than Chip, Coach Banna was the first person to come to see me. I was not surprised. It was already evident that his interest in me and my teammates went beyond our performance on the field.

Although I have not stayed in contact, I have often thought fondly about my experience with the team and Coach Banna and I welcome this opportunity to say that my respect for him is ongoing and to say thank you all these years later.
