T.J. Geith turned in a complete game for the second consecutive Sunday afternoon and led Louisiana to a 5-1 win over UALR which wrapped up a series sweep. Geith limited UALR to six hits with four being infield singles. Louisiana picked up its 16th straight victory over UALR and moved a season-high seven games above .500.

T.J. Geith pitched a complete game for the second consecutive Sunday and Louisiana completed a series sweep of UALR for the fifth straight season with a 5-1 win at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Geith limited the Trojans to six hits – four of the hits were infield singles – and struck out a career-high eight on a career-high 124 pitches.

Louisiana created distance from UALR after a three-spot in the sixth inning increased the lead to 5-0. The only run scored off of Geith came on a fielding error in the seventh inning.

Louisiana (26-19, 13-8 Sun Belt) picked up its 16th straight victory over UALR (16-26, 6-15 Sun Belt) and moved a season-high seven games above .500.

The Cajuns increased their conference win streak to a season-best five games and with Troy’s loss to Florida Atlantic moved within two games of first place in the Sun Belt standings. UL is currently in a three-way tie for second place with Florida Atlantic and FIU.

The Cajuns do not have a midweek game scheduled next week as the University administers final exams. UL is back in action Friday-Sunday, May 6-8 at Troy for an opportunity to make up more ground on the Sun Belt-leading Trojans.

Michael Strentz led the way with two RBI that came on a bases loaded single in the three-run sixth inning. Matt Goulas added two hits increasing his series total to a team-best six (6-for-12).

Mike Petello and Jordan Poirrier each posted two-hit games. For Petello, it was his team-leading 18th multiple-hit game and he increased his current hitting streak to eight games.

Geith, who lowered his season ERA 59 points down to 4.30, has now allowed only one run in his last 14 innings pitched at “The Tigue” dating back to the fifth inning of the South Alabama series finale.

Geith and UALR starting pitcher Calvin Drinnen made quick work of both lineups through the first two innings. Each allowed just one base hit with Geith facing the minimum and Drinnen just one over the minimum.

Goulas began the Cajuns half of the third inning with a single through the right side and later scored the game’s first run on an Alex Fuselier single.

UL added to the lead in the next inning taking advantage of a Trojans error. Petello led off with a single to left field and advanced to third on a misplay of a Poirrier grounder by UALR second baseman Jason Houston . Petello scored on a wild pitch by Drinnen during Lance Marvel’s at bat.

All the Trojans could muster off Geith from the fourth through sixth inning was three infield singles. After the leadoff batter reached in the sixth, Geith initiated a 1-6-3 double play for two quick outs.

The Cajuns pulled away in the bottom of the sixth loading the bases after Petello reached on a fielding error by UALR shortstop Greg Garcia then Poirrier and Marvel singled.

Strentz delivered the decisive blow off of Drinnen when he lifted a fly ball over the head of Sean Bignall in left field allowing Petello and Poirrier to score upping the Cajuns lead to 4-0. Goulas followed up with a run-scoring single of his own to make it 5-0.

A leadoff walk issued to Jake Rowell coupled with a Niko Navarro single quickly put a runner in scoring position for the Trojans in the seventh inning. Rowell moved up on a Bignall fly out and scored when Goulas misread a line drive to left field off the bat of Casey McCollum.

Geith recovered as he retired seven of the final nine batters he faced to wrap up his third complete game victory of the season.
