Suzanne Boudreaux

Senior, Distance

Lafayette, La. (Lafayette HS)

So why did you come to Louisiana-Lafayette?

I thought about going to another school, but I liked all the girls on the team and I really liked Coach Tim [Lemaire].

When did you start running?

I started when I was eight. My dad is a big runner; he used to run marathons a lot. One day he came back from a road race around Lafayette. He had won a medal, and I said, I want to win something. So, the next race, he brought me. I started to run one mile fun runs and then I began to compete in the 5Ks and longer events. I found my calling.

At 6-0, you are one of the tallest people on the team. Why cross country? Why not other events like sprints or hurdles?

I dont think I get any advantage over anyone else. It is just as hard moving my long legs each stride that I take. I just love to run and I love to work out. I am very competitive. I am not very fast. I guess my teammates know why I dont do the sprints. I am not very fast.

What is your fondest memory of running cross country?

I love running in those races when it has been raining and there is mud everywhere. It makes it so much fun to run. It adds another element to the race that track doesnt have. You have to deal with the terrain. It is a tons of fun to run in the rain and mud.

Which do you prefer: running cross country or running distance for track?

I like cross country and how its a smaller team. I think we are a lot closer than the track team. With track, it is virtually impossible to know everyone on the team and how they did in each match. But with cross country, we all go at the same time; we run our race; and I know how everyone did. It is shorter day as well. Track weekends can be very exhausting.

Describe a typical practice…

During cross country, we have 5:30 workouts. Thats in the morning. We usually dont have workouts. It is a way for us to get in our miles. Its difficult to get your miles in the afternoon when it is very hot. Getting as miles in as the other schools in our conference is a lot harder for us because of the heat so we try to get in as many miles as we can in cooler weather.

What will you miss the most about running cross country?

I will miss the team aspect. I am still going to run, whether it is just running or competing in triathlons. I am still going to compete, but I wont have a team anymore. I will miss the girls on the team and Coach Tim.

What will you miss the least about cross country?

Traveling. I hate to travel. I wont miss the long season. It will be more on my own.

What is the best thing about UL cross country?

Everyone loves our mascot. The Ragin Cajuns. When we go to the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., everyone loves to trade shirts with us. We get some really cool shirts from around the country because everyone wants a Ragin Cajuns t-shirt.

What are your personal goals for your senior season?

I dont really have many personal goals. Like always, I want the team to do better than everyone expects us to do at conference. We are always voted to get last and it is disappointing when we do get last. I would like to surprise people and show them that we have put in the work. Cross country is more of a team thing and I know that I probably wont get All-Conference, but I want to do better than I did the previous year and I want our team to do really well. We have had a few bad years and I want to show them that not only the boys can do well at conference.

What do you think about when you are running?

I take it one lap at a time. I am thinking about the race the whole time. I take it one lap at a time and from there I break that down into 200m. That is easiest way I have found to get through the race in track. For cross country, I just try to think, OK, I am going to catch this girl in front of me and then that one. I try to pick people off one-by-one and it makes the race go by faster.

Tell the story of how you got one visible scar…

I was actually running when I got this one on my left knee. I was running with my dad and we actually were running to the track. I was about 10 years old at the time. My shoe laces came untied and I tripped over them. I had to sit and wait for my dad to run home, get the car and come and pick me up because there was no way that I was running home with blood running down my leg.

What was your favorite Halloween costume growing up?

I wore the same one every year. I am not very creative. I think that is why I am an accounting major. I was always a 50s girl with a little poodle skirt outfit. I liked it. I am kind of girly.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

Im not really sure because I dont know if I have ever taken it. One of the guys one the team told me to, run like I stole something. I always thought that advice was pretty funny, but I dont know if thats the best advice I have ever been given.

If you could change wardrobes with anyone on your team, whose would it be and why?

Coach Tim. I love his fanny packs. He wears fanny packs at cross country meets because is always running around. I think he sticks bagels in there too. I would change with Coach Tim. He is bringing fanny packs back.

Whose wardrobe would you not want?

Coach Tim.

If you could compete in any other sport at UL what would it be?

Probably basketball. I used to play basketball when I was younger. It is fun. Im not very aggressive and dont really like contact sports.

When my cross country days are over, I want to…

Run. I want to still be able to compete in races and still be in running shape. I want to be in shape all my life. I dont I think will ever stop running. It is a lifestyle. I will probably practice accounting and I definitely want to become a CPA. If that isnt what I end up wanting to do I will go back to school. I will keep searching until I am happy, but I will always be running.

How would you liked to be remembered?

As someone who had fun running and the people that I ran with had fun running with me.

Who has been the biggest influence on your life?

Definitely my parents. My mom is very competitive and so is my dad. They always stressed sports. Especially being tall, it can be very awkward. They were always making sure I was doing sports or something physical so I wouldnt be quite as awkward. I did ballet when I was little. My mom thought that every little girl should do ballet. It was a little too slow for me. I thought I wanted to be a gymnast, but I only went to like two practices. I played some softball when I was little and basketball. I even played basketball my freshman year of high school.

What is the one possession you cant live without?

My running shoes. I couldnt image running barefoot. I have run against some girls who have run barefoot and I dont understand how they do it.

What is the funniest joke you have ever heard about your height?

Coach Tim has some pretty funny ones, but I always shoot back at him with short jokes because I tower over him. They all make me laugh. They are usually about the weather and how I am the first one to know when its raining. Every joke that comes out of Coach Tims mouth is pretty lame and most of them have to do with my height, but I think they are funny anyway.

If I could be a super hero, I would be…

Super Suz. I would want to be like the speed of light. I dont have much speed, so I think it might come in handy, especially with my sport.
