Bobby Banna’s Living Memorial, Steve Sere – Baseball 1968-71

I want to say many thanks for the opportunity to play for you from 1969-1971. You brought a “strong sense” of discipline to USL baseball.

This was evidenced by starting each practice with football calisthenics, agility drills, and when necessary, grass drills and running up McNaspy Stadium!

Anybody for infield and batting practice? I actually enjoyed it, having played local high school football.

However, a few left the program for a different kind of challenge at The Keg or Dave’s Top Hat!

My “Little Brother”, the highly touted De La Salle SS recruit Charlie Bordes, had some difficulties adjusting to your new approach.

This came to a head at the 1970 Easter Tourney at LSU when his “nonchalant” effort to field a grounder at practice resulted in your best Dick Butkus charge to meet him and correct his attitude! Of course, all of his “Brothers” ran to his rescue? LOL!!!

I owe you a special thanks for moving me to 3B from OF in 1970, it got me back in the game, having played C for a long time prior to USL.

You were and still are a straight forward standup man and coach, who expected your players to give their best effort.

P.S. I’m glad at 3B I could close up the hole to my left with the “fleet footed” Bordes at SS, LOL!!! However, NO position I played (seven at USL) could get my batting average to an acceptable level!!!

Love You Coach,

Thanks for the Memories!!!
