Home Phone: 604-420-0346 Soccer: UL’s keeper shuts out opposition September 21, 2006 – Stephanie Weston laughs when someone compares her to a stone wall, but with the roll she’s on she can afford a few chuckles. Weston has recorded three straight shutouts in goal for the Cajuns, helping the UL squad improve its record to 3-3-2 heading into Friday’s Sun Belt Conference home opener against Denver. Even more impressive, she’s pitched those shutouts all on the road, and has gone four seconds short of 300 minutes – five hours of playing time – without allowing a goal. “I don’t really think about streaks,” Weston said, “but it feels good for us to have a little bit of an undefeated streak going. We haven’t had that in a while.” “I know I have more confidence this year,” Weston said. “And I’m more comfortable with the team.” Weston did have three shutouts last year during a season in which the UL defense had to play nearly flawlessly in every match. Because of a lack of offensive production (15 goals in 17 matches), the defense played under pressure all year. This season, things are a little different. “Our goalkeeping’s been solid,” said coach Scot Wieland. “Stephanie’s not a freshman any more, and she’s better because she’s confident and she worked really hard this summer. “We’ve been very strong all-around in the back. Kerri Luyties, Taunya Geelhoed and Bridgette Adorno are all juniors across the back, and they’ve been very good.” “We’ve always been good defensively,” Weston said. “This year, our offense is much better. Against Southern Miss, we were down two goals with 20 minutes left and got back to tie it.” Weston’s 50 saves and 6.25 saves per match both rank second in the Sun Belt, numbers boosted by the recent streak that includes a 2-0 win at Northwestern State and a 1-0 win at North Florida around a 0-0 tie at Southeastern La. Weston knows the competition gets more intense beginning Friday. Denver is 4-2-1 and has allowed three goals in seven matches, and Sunday foe North Texas is 4-2-2 and won last year’s Sun Belt regular-season and tournament titles.
