Obituary for Simon O. Chiasson Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at an 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Simon O. Chiasson, Jr., 76, who died on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Lafayette General Medical Center.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Reverend Gary Schexnayder, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Vickie Hebert and Phil Frederick. Giftbearers will be Alexandra Hebert and Madison Hebert. Eulogist will be Simon Jude Chiasson. Karen Broussard and Simon Jude Chiasson will sing for the service.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Audrey Patin Chiasson; his son, Simon Jude Chiasson and his wife Beth; his two daughters, Kelly Chiasson Frederick and her husband Phil, and Vickie Chiasson Hebert and her husband Eddie; six grandchildren, Alexandra Hebert, Kyle Frederick, Madison Hebert, Jared Frederick, Zachary Frederick, and Simon Austen Chiasson; one sister, Jean Bernos; and one brother, Richard Chiasson and his wife Pat.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon O. Chiasson, Sr. and Nettie Thibodeaux Chiasson.

A proud lifelong resident of Lafayette, Simon was a 1956 graduate of Cathedral High School. He then attended SLI. Simon was a two time Golden Glove Champion for the State of Louisiana and was a professional boxer. He proudly served his country in the United States Army Special Forces and was a Green Beret with the 20th Special Forces Group. Simon was a Master Certified Track & Field Official and a member of the Southern TAC and USA Association. He is in both the USL and LSU Track & Field Officials Association Halls of Fame and was an official in the 1996 U.S. Summer Olympics. He is the cofounder of Lafayette Junior Track & Field Program, and started the Acadiana Track & Field Association. He was the founding member of the Lafayette Parkinson’s Support Group. Simon was also a charter member of the Lafayette North Rotary Club, was the PTC president and was president of Sts. Leo-Seton Catholic School Board, and a member of the St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church parish, where he was the head Eucharistic Minister. He will best be remembered for always being a fighter who never met a stranger. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his friends.

Pallbearers will be Richard Chiasson, Simon Jude Chiasson, Phil Frederick, Kyle Frederick, Jared Frederick, Zachary Frederick, and Eddie Hebert.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Jimmy Patin, Simon Austen Chiasson, and Matt Duffy.

The family requests that visitation be observed in Martin & Castille’s DOWNTOWN location on Monday from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM and on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until time of service.

A Rosary will be prayed Monday at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.

The Chiasson family extends a heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated ICU Staff at LGMC for the loving care given to Simon and their family, the St. Elizabeth Seton Choir, and Matt and Gerry Duffy for their loving support.
