With the Sun Belt Track and Field Championships now less than two weeks away, Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns got in some tune-up action at the Indian Classic hosted on Saturday by UL Monroe.

Scott Lowry showed he’s headed in the right direction as he won the pole vault in a jump-off with Sun Belt foe Shane Aronson of Arkansas State as both athletes cleared 15-6.

Also in the field, Derek Richardson was third in the long jump at 22-11.75 and Kenny Minton placed fourth in the triple jump.

Cajun teammates Kyle Ward and Luke Moody were among those with good days, turning in a 1-3 finish in the 110-meter hurdles. Ward won in 14.26, while Moody was in third at 14.55.

Louis Roquemore was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.84, while Moody was fifth in 56.74.

Sprinter Jarvis Murchison was in solid form, with runner-up finishes in both the 100 (10
.50, behind Chris Johnson’s 10.30) and the 200 (21
.35, a near-miss behind the 21.34 of Josh Harvey).

Another top five finisher on the track was Ryan Dupree with a 4:07.70 time in the 1500 meter run.

The top performer among Ragin’ Cajun women was triple jump winner Latoya Celestine, who posted a 38-6.75 best effort.

Jasmine Collins gave Southern Mississippi’s Naomi Kiprotich a battle in the 800 before the USM runner prevailed, 2:15.68 to Collins’ 2:19.33. The race also included UL’s Leah Legere (6th, 2:25.61) and Rose Wilson (7th, 2:28.53).

The Cajuns’ Jennifer Gautreaux placed fourth in the 1500 in a time of 5:02.66, while Ashley Brooks was fourth in the 400-meter dash in 58.96.

The Sun Belt Conference Championship Meet is May 13-15 at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans.
