Guillory takes over at Teurlings

Replaces Brodhead as coach of powerhouse girls program

To say Sallie Guillory is living the life would be an understatement.
While most 23-year-olds are in that state of limbo between college and the real world, Guillory is on the brink of taking over as head coach of a girls’ basketball powerhouse.

Guillory was officially announced as the new head coach at Teurlings Catholic Wednesday. She replaced Garry Brodhead, who will join McNeese State’s staff on July 1.

“It’s amazing. I’m really excited about it,” Guillory said. “I knew that Teurlings was where I wanted to be. After this past year, I probably got more offers to be a head coach somewhere else and I wasn’t interested in leaving.
“When I found out (Brodhead) was leaving, I knew immediately that I would apply for the job. Teurlings is where I want to be. I just feel like we started something and I need to continue it.”

Guillory, a 2001 graduate of Lafayette High and 2005 graduate of UL, has served as an assistant under Brodhead since 2002.

“She was definitely my recommendation to replace me,” Brodhead said. “She made it a lot easier for me to take the McNeese job. I never really thought the time was right to move in the past. You hate to leave these kids, but one of the things that made it easy was I know Sallie can do the job.”

Guillory credits her parents and previous coaches as influences in her life. While at Lafayette High, she played under current UL coach Errol Rogers. She also played for Brodhead in AAU, as well as coaching alongside him the last five years.

“I’ve been very lucky to work with some great coaches,” Guillory said. “I had Errol (Rogers) and Matt Citron coaching me. I was able to learn a little bit from everybody.”

Guillory said she plans to continue the tradition that Brodhead has built over the past 10 years, as well as add some of her touches to the program.

“I’m not going to change a whole lot,” Brodhead said. “I think the reason it worked so well is that we all brought something to the team. In five years, we went to the Sweet 16 four times, so it’s no use changing things now.”

Her first “official” contest will be today when the Lady Rebels take on defending 2A state champion and national power Iota in a summer league game.

“(Iota coach Stan) Baggett called me to tell me congratulations,” Guillory said. “He said that after the game, he wanted to go out to eat to celebrate. I told him the best gift he could give me was to not let his girls play in the game tonight.”

Not only does Guillory face the task of taking over a Rebel program that has garnered statewide respect and is considered a contender every year, she must do so as the Rebels move up to Class 4A.

“That’s the situation we’re in and we’re not going to try to change anything,” Guillory said. “We’re just going to continue to work and play to that level. We like challenges, we’ve always played a real competitive schedule.

“Class 4A will be a little different, you have to learn new district opponents and their strengths and weaknesses. But we’re ready for the challenge.”
