UL is losing its popular head strength and conditioning coach, Rusty Whitt.

Whitt is leaving the Ragin’ Cajuns for a similar position at Texas Tech, UL football coach Mark Hudspeth confirmed via text message Saturday night.

The move comes just as the Cajuns have moved into a new, state-of-the-art weight and conditioning room at UL’s new athletic performance center.

Whitt has been at UL since the fall of 2010, before Hudspeth arrived after that season.

Whitt, known for innovative training methods like running stadiums steps while carrying heavy weights in a backpack, came to UL from Rice.

Prior to working at Rice, he served in the United States Army from August 2003 through January 2009 and was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom V and VI.

His previous stops included a stop as head strength coach at Sam Houston State, where he worked with Cajuns basketball coach Bob Marlin.

With Whitt’s departure, UL will need to name both a new strength and a new football offensive coordinator to replace Jay Johnson, who left after the 2015 season to become offensive coordinator at Minnesota.

Hudspeth said Saturday that the Cajuns are “in the process” of making both hires.
