Home Phone: 985-385-4105 Obituary: Roy G. “Mike” Simmons April 29, 1927 – January 16, 2010 MORGAN CITY – Mike was a lifelong resident of Morgan City who passed away Saturday, January 16, 2010, at his residence at the age of 82. Mike was a loving and truly devoted husband to his wife, Gay, for over 60 years. He served as an elder at Atkinson Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Doric 205 Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree Master Mason with the Baton Rouge Consistory. He was also a Shriner. Upon his high school graduation, Mike signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Giants. Shortly thereafter Mike was called to service with the U.S. Navy. While serving in the Navy during WWII he was stationed in Bainbridge Maryland and he played both baseball & football. He then went on to play football while attending Santa Ana Jr. College in California and San Diego State University. Also, while in college he continued to play professional baseball assigned to the Evangeline league. He received his master’s in education administration from LSU and a specialist in education from USL in Lafayette with a minor in History. While attending both LSU and USL he served as a football assistant coach and recruiter. He was a dedicated coach and educator for over 30 years. He coached and taught at many high schools such as Franklin High, Comeaux High, Spring Hill High, and Fair Park High in Shreveport and was the athletic director at both Central Catholic and Morgan City High School. He was a devoted member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and believed that bringing the first chapter here to his home town of Morgan City one of his greatest accomplishments. He also was honored to serve on the St Mary Parish School Board. Mike is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gaydel Gaspar Simmons, of Morgan City; his brother, John R. Drackett, of Conroe, Texas; his sisters Jaclyn D. Cutrone, of New Orleans, and Joan D. Garber, of Morgan City. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Roy Edmond Simmons and Katherine Griffin Drackett and John Robert Drackett, Sr. Visitation will be held Monday at Hargrave Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. with Masonic and funeral services at 3 p.m. at Hargrave Funeral Home. Mike will be laid to rest in the Morgan City Mausoleum.
