Robert Sidman Obituary

Lafayette, LA – Dr. Robert “Bob” Sidman passed away unexpectedly on August 20, 2016 between the last two acts of his latest role in Lafayette theater. He is survived by his dearly loved wife, Patricia Drury Sidman; his beloved daughter, Karin Sidman Croghan (John Croghan III) of Middlefield, CT; brother Peter Sidman (Suzanne) of Rumney, NH;
and his sister Lynn Levine (Steve) of Oak Park, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, I. Nathan Sidman and Marian Berner Sidman. He was a native of Troy, NY.

Dr. Sidman earned his A.B. degree at Harvard University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He taught first at University of Connecticut and in 1974 became professor of mathematics at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

He was the recipient of numerous grants for professional research and the author of nearly 40 publications in his research specialization, mathematical applications to medical science.

He treasured local theatre and appeared in countless productions ,in both dramatic and comedic roles, over 40 years and throughout Acadiana. He volunteered his time at Hospice of Acadiana and the VITA Adult Literacy program in Lafayette.

His friends and associates found him brilliant, funny, caring, and open, his opinions and heart right on his sleeve. He had tremendous talent on stage and was a devoted husband,loving father, and good friend to the many who already miss him.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, 101 West Vermillion St., Lafayette.

Dr. Sidman’s family asks that in lieu of flowers donations in his memory be made to Cité des Arts, 109 Vine St., Lafayette 70501 or to Temple Shalom, P.O. Box 53711, Lafayette 70505.
