NELSON STOKLEY TRIBUTE
ROBERT ARVIE (TE, OLB) 1987-1991

My recruiting class of 1987 was Nelson Stokley’s first signing class at the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Some of the signees were PD. Broussard, Van Ray Alexander, Troy Wingerter, Jeff LeJuene, Francis Touchet and a few more. I was sold on USL after my official visit. I saw Theron Harrison, Brian Mitchell, Patrick Taylor, Terrance Harrison & Clifford Champ walk around with those tight sweaters (chiseled physique). I wanted Coach Brad Roll to shape my body in that image!!!

Nelson Stokley gave me a second chance! Even though I played as a true freshman, I was not ready academically. I struggled my first two years and eventually received that dreadful letter stating that I was academically suspended for one calendar year.

I immediately informed Coach Stokley of this letter. He made a few calls for me. Nonetheless, the second letter came stating that my appeal has been declined or upheld.

I walked into Coach Nelson’s office and pleaded to him that I could not go back home as a disappointment to my family and to the City of Opelousas. So much expectation was put upon my shoulders.

Coach Stokley picked up his phone and told whoever was on the other end, “Do what you can to get Arvie back into school!!!”

I was given a second chance! The following year, I had asked for and granted my red shirt year. I used that year to repeat all of the courses that I made an F or D. I passed all of them and removed those F’s & D’s off of my transcript.

I moved into a room by myself and focused on staying up all night studying and getting my school work. I met my future wife Stephanie Benoit (Duson, LA).

Stephanie received her BA in Business Management during my junior year. I knew that I had to graduate within the five years of my scholarship.

I took 22 hours during the fall of 1991. I took 18 hours during the spring and 9 hours that summer of 1992. I graduated that summer and received my BA during the fall commencement.

I have been a high school teacher & coach for the past 26 years. The last six years as the Head Football Coach at Woodlawn in Shreveport (2012) & Richwood High School in Monroe, LA (2013- present).

I would not be in this situation if not for the leadership and help from Coach Nelson Stokley. Every young person deserves a SECOND CHANCE!! I was given that SECOND CHANCE!!
THANKS COACH NELSON STOKLEY!

GO CAJUNS!!!
