Rickey’s Living Memorial for the Bobby Banna Tribute is followed by an article by Dan McDonald about Rickey being honored at the Top 28. His LM was submitted on 4/10/2017 and posted by Dr. Ed Dugas on that day.

Bobby Banna’s Living Memorial, Rickey Broussard – Baseball 1967-70, Coaches 1984-86

Coach Banna was the first coach I had who did not coddle me. He was demanding and we all respected him. Winning was important to him and we improved as a team.

We competed harder, got tougher, and learned to fight through adversity. He brought novel ideas to spring training, many of them very helpful, particularly the isometric type exercises for hitting and throwing strength…and then there were the football grass drills that left us shaking our heads…I think we all realized in the end that there was a ‘method to his madness’.

Anyone who has ever played for Bobby Banna loves and respects him as both a coach and person!

The Top 28 Tournament committee has been honoring some of the most
important figures in Louisiana basketball history since the tournament
came to Lafayette in 1997. In that time, 89 individuals who have made such
contributions have been a part of the Honoree Program.

But, until Saturday night, the prestigious group had never included a pair of brothers, especially not two who are virtually hometown products.

At halftime of Saturday’s Class 4A championship game, Rickey and Danny
Broussard were among five inductees who, according to the official program, “have enriched the lives of basketball fans through their unique contributions to Louisiana’s basketball legacy.”

The two graduates of Meaux High were honored along with all-time NBA great and current New Orleans Hornets vice president Willis Reed, long-time UL Monroe basketball coach Mike Vining and long-time prep coach and University of Louisiana staffer Dr. Ed Dugas.

Rickey, the elder Broussard, was a member of the UL basketball staff for
three years and helped that squad to three NIT appearances – one in the
Final Four – before taking the head position at Nicholls State in Thibodaux. In his 12 seasons there, the Colonels won two Southland Conference titles and made two NCAA appearances.

He was the Southland Coach of the Year three times and twice the state’s
collegiate Coach of the Year, and most recently was an assistant at LSU and still serves on the Tiger athletic staff.

Prior to his college career, Rickey Broussard was an All-State pick at Meaux and was a member of the Ragin’ Cajun baseball team for four years.

He later coached at Breaux Bridge, Meaux, Fatima and St. Thomas More,
where he left to join the UL staff. He also coached the Acadiana All-Stars AAU team to a national runner-up finish in 1981.

Younger brother Danny took over as St. Thomas More’s head coach in 1983 at the young age of 23, and has turned the Cougars into one of the state’s dominant programs. By age 45, he had surpassed 600 wins, becoming one of
the youngest coaches in high school boys’ basketball history to reach that
mark at the same school, and currently holds a 628-196 career mark including a 195-43 record in district games.

Danny Broussard has been named state Coach of the Year three times and twice selected to coach in the state All-Star Game, in addition to earning district honors 14 times and parish honors eight times.

His team has played in the Top 28 seven times, including a state title in 1986 and three runner-up appearances.
