We are pleased to announce that Peter Achi has been named recipient of the Neiheisel Award for the spring 2018 semester. Achi earned a Master of Science degree in Physics from UL-Lafayette at commencement exercises on May 11, with a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average in all graduate courses. He previously earned a B.S. in Physics in 2011 and an M.A. in Music in 2013, both from ULL. He has been accepted into the PhD program at Georgia Tech, where he will pursue a doctorate in biophysics.

Named in honor of the late Dr. Richard Neiheisel, a distinguished professor of History at UL-Lafayette, the Neiheisel Award recognizes excellence in academic achievement by graduate students in the arts, humanities, and sciences at ULL and is presented in the fall and spring and semesters. Recipients are selected from nominations submitted from the College of Arts, College of Liberal Arts, and College of Science.

In addition to congratulating Mr. Achi, officers of the Association extend thanks to Dr. Mary Neiheisel, whose generous endowment makes this award possible, and to Dr. Mary Farmer-Kaiser, Dean of the Graduate School, for her invaluable assistance in the selection process.

In addition, Jaden Danos has been named recipient of the Phi Beta Kappa award as the outstanding undergraduate student. Jaden received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from ULL on May 11, with a 4.0 grade-point average. He was also named outstanding graduate from the College of Science for the spring 2018 semester. Jaden will enter the LSU School of Dentistry in the fall.

Richard G. Neiheisel Bio

Richard G. Neiheisel, a native of Boulder, Colorado, earned his degrees from the University of Colorado and attended the University of Texas at Austin. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Colorado his junior year and graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and immediately entered the Graduate School at the University of Colorado. He was also a member of Kappa Delta Phi, Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies. He began his academic career at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1962. Although his major was Ancient and Modern European History, Neiheisel, in addition to his courses in Modern and Ancient European History also taught American History and Russian History.

Richard G. Neiheisel initiated the Neiheisel/Phi Beta Kappa award at the Phi Beta Kappa meeting in May, 1987. A plaque in Dupré Library bears the name of each annual Phi Beta Kappa recipient. In memory of her husband, Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel has continued the award since 1988. The account originated in 1988 from the contributions of friends and relatives in memory of Richard G. Neiheisel, who died December 13, 1987. In 1997, his wife established the endowed award to guarantee the recognition of outstanding students in perpetuity. In 20??, Mary established the Richard G. and Mary B. Neiheisel Dissertation award which is presented annually to a Ph. D. student in a doctoral program in Liberal Arts, Education, Sciences, or Engineering. The Richard G. Neiheisel Endowed Professorship in History is in the planning stages.

Richard Neiheisel was well read and enjoyed great books as well as music, playing the piano, Broadway shows, photography, and traveling. He was a great supporter of Community Concerts, Chorale Acadienne, and the Fine Arts Association (later known as Performing Arts Society of Acadiana).

Richard was a ham radio operator and assisted with communications in a number of hurricanes. On weekends he spent time ‘hamming’ with family and friends in Colorado, California, and Texas. He tutored a number of young men in the Morse Code and ham radio.

Richard was the son of William and Lulu Neiheisel of Boulder, Colorado, and had four brothers and two sisters, ten nephews, six nieces and three godchildren. He was a special person and loving uncle to Russell and Rebecca Brown.

He cherished and was very proud and appreciative of his extraordinary friendship with Paula B.. Gremillion, ULL, ’70.

He was married to Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel, a Nursing professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 1966-present, who held the Lafayette General Hospital Endowed Professor (1994-2000) and the Pfizer/Ardoin Endowed Professor (2000-2012) in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the Lafayette General Medical Center Endowed Professor in 2013-present. She joined the graduate faculty in 1988 and was appointed as the first Graduate Nursing Coordinator in the College of Nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. A native of Texas, Dr. Neiheisel began her studies at Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Antonio, Texas in 1960. Her B.S. in Nursing is from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, TX. She received an M.S. in Nursing from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1965. Her Ed.D., completed in 1981, is from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She then completed a Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum in 1995 from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 2005-2007, she completed the course work in the Adult Nurse Practitioner and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner tracks from Northern Kentucky University. She piloted the core courses for the Nurse Practitioner program at ULL and served as the NP coordinator from 1996-2007.

Two of Richard’s godchildren, Aimee E. Falgout-Forbes’06 and Richard J. Falgout’10 (Richie) graduated from UL, Lafayette. Aimee is married, lives in Boston and works in wholesale merchandising. Richie, (his namesake) is a Ragin Cajun attended UL, Lafayette from 2006-2010 and has one son, Aiden. His third godchild, Rachel Falgout Lokitz, completed her studies at Millsaps College and her law degree at University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and has two children, Leah and Robert. How proud he would be of these children and their accomplishments!
