Tribute to Coach, Dean and First Gentlemen Raymond Blanco

I first laid eyes on Coach Blanco when I was in about the third grade at Catholic High in New Iberia. He and Coach Banna came to New Iberia the same time. I remember the younger boys, trying to impress the new coaches, would run by them and play tackle the man with the ball to show that we were tough.

I watched with amazement how these coaches changed boys into men. I knew that I wanted to be part of that fraternity.

Coach Blanco did not coach me in high school as he went on to USL before my freshman year at CHS. I was fortunate enough to be recruited and played 4 years at USL. All the coaches were hard nose, get in your face, guys.

Because of my experience at Catholic High I knew what to expect at USL. Most of the athletes had no clue of what was going to happen. Coach Blanco was the defensive coordinator in my freshman year. I was grateful to be on the offensive side of the ball.

For me nothing had really changed and neither did Coach Blanco or Coach Banna. They were both hard nosed wonderful men who cared about the boys who would leave as men.

Coach Banna was my high school coach for four years. Coach Blanco only coach me for one year at USL. I loved and respected Coach Banna and still do. He, like Coach Blanco, coached us about life.

Men like Coach Banna and Coach Blanco come along very seldom in life. I am blessed to have known both of these gentlemen and I will never forget what they have taught me about life.

There’s an old saying “ A good coach teaches you about the game. A great coach teaches you about life.“
Sincerely, Richard‘Dicky’ Haik

Bobby Banna’s Living Memorial, Richard “Dicky” Haik – Football 1968-71

I have known Coach Banna since elementary school. He was my high school
coach and also one of my coaches at USL. I have never known a finer
gentleman in my entire life.

Coach Banna was an inspiration in my life as an athlete and a human being!
He did not only coach me about sports but he taught me about life!

Coach Banna loved to win but most importantly he taught me the importance of character! He is absolutely a man of character and integrity. His lessons
off the field and on the field were always about doing things the right way.

Coach Banna is a man I love and admire and I thank him for being in my life!
He has touched so many in so many great ways that words cannot express! I
have always tried to live up to his expectations but I will never be the
man, the gentleman or the Christian that he is and has been all of his life.

Coach Banna is a man I admire and a person I wish to emulate! I am grateful
that he has been a huge part of my life.

My name is Richard “Dicky ” Haik. I play football for Coach Banna at CHS in
New Iberia and I’m proud to say I played for him at USL from 1968 to 1971.

God bless you Coach Banna and your beautiful wife and children!

I truly love you for all you have done for me and all you have done for all
the young man you have touched with your remarkable ability and your great
character!
