Information provided by daughter Pat on Nov. 10, 2014. * * * * * * CARENCRO- Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 15, 2009, at a 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Carencro for Ray Joseph Melancon, 85, who passed away Monday, January 12, 2009, at 5 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center in Lafayette. Interment will be in St. Peter Catholic Cemetery in Carencro. The Rev. Bill Melancon, pastor of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, will officiate at the services. Musical selections will be provided by Johnny Dohmann. Mr. Melancon was a native and lifelong resident of Carencro. He attended SLI, now call ULL, after high school, but before graduating he volunteered for military service with the Navy Seabees in World War II. His unit trained with the US Marines and followed them from island to island in the Pacific ending in the Philippines when the war ended. He returned to Carencro and took over his father’s blacksmith, hardware and John Deere implement business and transformed it into Melancon Equipment Company servicing the farmers and contractors in the Acadiana area for over 60 years. He was an incredible businessman and friend to many. Ray was active in St. Peter Roman Catholic Church as an usher and was involved in community activities sponsoring little league baseball teams for many years. Hunting was one of his passions. He enjoyed duck hunting in Holly Beach, deer hunting in Llano, Texas, pheasant hunting in Kansas, quail hunting in Arnaudville with his brother-in-law, Beau deBoisblanc and dove hunting in Mexico as recent as 2005 with his son and grandson and nephews. He was a regular poker player on Tuesday nights at Buddy Bowles with his brother Ed and others. He enjoyed UL basketball games and the fun road trips made with family. He was a developer of Melancon I-49 Storage Center. Ray was past president of the Deep South Equipment Dealers Assn. and past board member of Hub City Bank in Lafayette. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World, Carencro War Veterans, Knights of Columbus and the Holy Name Society. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and had a kind word for all. Survivors include wife, Marie Nina Mouton Melancon of Carencro; one son, Dr. Michael R. Melancon and his wife, Peggy, of Lafayette; two daughters, Jennifer Connolly and her husband, Frank; and Patricia “Pat” Fontenot and her husband, Kevin, all of Carencro; one brother, Edmond “Ed” Melancon, Jr. and his wife, Rowena, of Carencro; one sister, Joyce M. Elder of Midland, Texas; sister-in-law, Evelyn Conque Melancon of Carencro; eleven grandchildren, Jeanne Travasos and her husband, Aaron, Laura Buller and her husband, Shannon, Anne Connolly, Dustin Melancon and his wife, Jennifer, and Joshua Melancon and his wife, Sandra, Marnie Hoyt and her husband, Casey, Kary Ritter, Katie Baillargeon, Kelli Fontenot, Kayla Fontenot, and Adam Fontenot; seven great grandchildren, Audrey Travasos, Emmeline Travasos, James Buller, Vanessa Melancon, Ellery Hoyt, Reese Hoyt, and Carter Andrus. He was preceded in death by parents Edmond D. Melancon, Sr., and the former Laurence Webre; two brothers, Lester J. Melancon, Sr. and Dr. William Melancon; and by one sister, Florine M. deBoisblanc. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday and will continue from 8 a.m. until service time on Thursday. Memorial contributions in the name of Ray J. Melancon may be made to The Women’s Center, 1018 Harding St., Suite 102, Lafayette, LA 70503. Pallbearers will be Dustin Melancon, Joshua Melancon, Al deBoisblanc, Buddy Melancon, Wilton Menard, Eddie Melancon, LeRay Menard, and L.J. Melancon.
