Home Phone: -- Obituary: Raughman Monroe Browning Sr. – Men’s Basketball 1940-42 – Military Veteran – July 14,1997 Obituary: BROWNING SR., RAUHMAN MONROE A retired Ethyl Corp. employee with 38 years of service and resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 4:05 p.m. Monday, July 14, 1997, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. He was 75 and a native of Lottie. He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II. Visiting was at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Visiting at the funeral home chapel 8:30 a.m. until religious services at noon Thursday, conducted by the Rev. Daniel Lemoine. Interment in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survived by wife of 50 years, Norma Holeman Browning; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Mark Fritchie; a son and daughter-in-law, Barrett and Melissa “Missy” Browning; a sister, Lora Lee Sherburne; and four grandchildren, Hayley Holeman and Mark Albert Fritchie, Hannah Dianne and Lauren Beverly Browning. Preceded in death by a son, Rauhman M. Browning Jr.; sisters, Clemence Browning, Haydee Browning, Velma Browning and Rena Mahoney; brothers, Leander Bates “Pete,” J. Holcombe and Pryor V. Browning. Pallbearers will be Harry Sherburne, Mike Mahoney, Bates Browning, Drew Browning, Jeff Holeman and Todd Fritchie. He was a graduate of Pride High School and a starter in the first all-A retired Ethyl Corp. employee with 38 years of service and resident of Baton Rouge, he died at 4:05 p.m. Monday, July 14, 1997, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. After two seasons as a scholarship athlete at University of Southwestern Louisiana, where he was a member of the S Club and Tau Sigma Delta fraternity, he entered the U.S. Coast Guard for a three-year tour of duty. Upon his return to Baton Rouge, he began a basketball officiating career which spanned 44 years; the first 19 as an official and the last 25 years as the Baton Rouge area high school basketball assignment secretary. He was a member of the Gulf States Basketball Officials College Conference for 10 years. In 1990, he received the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Distinguished Service Award and in 1996 he was inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association/Louisiana High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, in honor of the service and leadership he had given to the high schools of Louisiana and their athletic programs. He was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla Reunion Group, Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, Ethyl Corporation Retirees Club, American Legion and American Contract Bridge League.
