Golf: Fendt Surges On Final Afternoon

Oct. 19, 2010 RaginCajuns.com

Philipp Fendt jumped 17 spots up the leaderboard on Tuesday as Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns golf team wrapped up the David Toms Intercollegiate with a eighth-place finish.

As a team, the Cajuns shot 875 and finished at 11-over par. LSU (848) won the event followed by Arkansas (850), South Alabama (855), Middle Tennessee (866) and North Florida (866).

Fendt was the surprise of the day for UL. Starting the day in a tie for 29th, the junior would go low for the second straight day and posted 69 (-3). He eagled the second hole, a 512-yard par five, before birding three of the final five holes. He finished with a score of 213 (-3) which was good for a four-way tie for 12th place. Dating back to last season, Fendt has finished in the top-20 in 10-straight tournaments.

Austin Gutgell of LSU outpaced the field of 78 golfers with a score of 206 (-10).

Andrew Noto struggled on the final day with a 3-over round of 75. He started the day in a tie for ninth position but slipped into tie for 20th place at 1-under par (215).

Other than Fendt, Christoph Weninger was the only other Cajun to break par in the final round. The freshman shot 2-under to wind up at 218 (?1) for the tournament. He finished in a tie for 33rd place.

Also competing on the final day were Peter Lamaris and Kelsey Angelle. Lamaris carded a total of 232 and Angelle finished with a score of 239.

Ethan Savoy competed as an individual and recorded a score of 231.

The Cajuns will return to the links in a week at the Memphis Intercollegiate at Colonial Country Club in Memphis Tenn. The tournament runs from Oct. 26-26.
