Frank “Charles” Delana Funeral Services Scheduled

July 13, 2006 – Frank Charles Delana

LAFAYETTE – Funeral services will be held at a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Friday, July 14, 2006, at Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette for Frank Charles Delana, 99, who passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his residence.

Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Mausoleum in Broussard, La.

The Very Rev. Monsignor J. Douglas Courville, JCL, pastor of St. Jules Church in Lafayette will be celebrant of the Mass and conduct the services.

Musical selections will be sung by vocalist Jodi Bollich.

Mr. Delana, the son of the late Frank Delana and the former Rita Fabre, was a native of the Lafayette Parish. After graduating from Broussard High School, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from S.L.I., formerly U.S.L., then a Master of Arts degree from L.S.U. After working in New Orleans for one year, he began his teaching career in 1929 at Broussard High School for duration of five years followed by five year tenure at Scott High School as Assistant Principal and Athletic Coach. He then taught four years at Carencro High School. In 1943, he was a Physical Education Instructor at Lafayette High School and in the same year was appointed Principal at Carencro High School. He was called into the armed services and served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as a Cryptographer from January 1944 to November 1945. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Carencro High School to resume the position of Principal. He later served as a Lafayette Parish School Board supervisor of education followed by an appointment as Assistant Superintendent. In January 1965, he was appointed Superintendent of Schools for Lafayette Parish and served in that capacity until his retirement at age 65.

He also served as president of the Lafayette Parish Teachers Association; president of the Lafayette Parish retired Teachers Association, president of the Louisiana State Supervisors Association, and president of the Lafayette Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a national organization of educational leaders. In 1987 and 2005 he was honored for his meritorious professional contribution to education.

He holds life membership in the National Education Association. For his contributions to education, he was awarded an honorary life membership in the State Parent-Teachers Association.

He was a member of the Carencro Lions Club, Lafayette Parish Red Cross, American Legion, United Givers, VFW commander of the General Lafayette Post 2103, Veterans Planning Board, Demeter Fraternity of S.L.I., American Federation of Teachers, Louisiana Schools Superintendents Association, Red Red Rose, Louisiana Retired Teachers Association, U.S.L. Alumni Association, Board of Regents, Coordinating Council for Higher Education Advisory Committee.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Ortego Delana; two daughters, Sharon Bollich and husband, Byron, and Paulette Fishback and husband, Harry; three grandchildren, Lisa Bollich Haile, Troy Bollich and Scott Fishback; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lena Bernard; two brothers, Felix and Willis; one sister, Mrs. Pete Larriviere; and two great grandchildren, Sophia Fishback and Parker Fishback.

The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation his caregivers, Mattie Citizen and Mary Meche, doctors, medical assistants, neighbors, friends who kept in touch daily, and Hospice of Acadiana.

Visitation will be observed from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, July 13, 2006, and will continue from 8 a.m. Friday until time of services.

A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. today, July 13, 2006, by Reggie Bollich, Mattie Citizen and Mary Meche.

Pallbearers will be Troy Bollich, Luke Bollich, Harry Fishback, Scott Fishback, Rusty Haile, Ronnie Reaux, Danny Broussard and Byron Bollich.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Acadiana, 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503.
