Arceneaux earns recognition for role in
prep track

Pat Arceneaux spent years championing the sport of high school track and field, sometimes running afoul of the powers that be within the state but never fearful of taking a stand.
The one-time Cathedral-Carmel, Teurlings Catholic and Breaux Bridge High mentor was honored by the Louisiana Track and Field Coaches’ Association last weekend for his role in the growth of the sport, along with former Byrd coach Woodrow Turner and ex-McNeese State coach Bob Hayes.

“The award was their way of saying thanks,” Arceneaux said. “It was a real nice deal. My kids were able to come in for it and my family took part in it.

“It let the young coaches know that it wasn’t always easy, but that it can be done if you have the will to do it.”
One of Arceneaux’s biggest battles was with the Louisiana High School Athletic Association over inequities in its handling of track, and in fact the LTFCA was an offshoot of that issue.

“Twenty five years or so ago, we had a hard time getting the LHSAA to hold track clinics in the spring, before the (outdoor) season began,” Arceneaux said. “We begged them, but they held it in the summer. We started the organization to have the clinic.”

Last weekend’s honors presentation was part of this year’s coaches’ clinic.

“We also had a real problem trying to get nine lanes at the state meet,” Arceneaux said. “One year we had 24 teams in our regional, and there were six or nine in north Louisiana. We qualified two and they qualified two. It wasn’t right.

“We said we’ve got to get that changed, and ultimately we did it by class. I did my homework. I went before the LHSAA executive committee because it was time someone stood up for our sport. It passed 13-2, and that’s how we got nine lanes at state.”

With a nine-lane setup, each of three regions sends three performers to the state meet, a more balanced way to determine state champions and more fair to more densely populated regions.

Arceneaux, who was the coach of the year in the state in 1992, previously served as president of the organization he helped to form.
