National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) announced Tuesday night at their annual sports banquet that former Ragin’ Cajuns shortstop Nerissa Myers was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year, presented by Louisville Slugger, and one of 19 players named to the All-NPF Team. After signing with the Chicago Bandits in June 2013, Myers joined the Akron Racers this season, leading the league in RBI (43), two-out RBI (19), slugging percentage (.599), and in the top four in batting average (.365). On the season, Myers totaled 50 hits, including nine home runs and five doubles, six stolen bases and posted an on base percentage of .474. “We’re so proud of her,” said head coach Michael Lotief. “It’s our responsibility as coaches to get these kids ready for their next challenges and endeavors in life. It makes you proud (to see players succeed), and everyone has the satisfaction that they have done their part.” Myers had a successful four-year career (2010-13) playing for the Ragin’ Cajuns, earning All-Sun Belt First Team honors in 2012 and 2013. A native of Lafayette, Myers was selected to the All-Lafayette Regional First Team and was named a College Sports Madness Third Team All-American in 2012. While at Louisiana, Myers set the all-time record with 243 runs scored over her career. In 2012, she led the nation with 83 runs, breaking the SBC record and her own from 2011. “Nerissa is very competitive. She always enjoyed competing and being challenged,” Lotief said. “She’s a hard worker, a good teammate and understands the game.” National Pro Fastpitch is headquarted in Nashville, Tennessee. The league, created to give elite female fastpitch players the opportunity to pursue a professional career in their chosen sport has operated since 1997 under the name of Women’s Pro Fastpitch (WPF) and Women’s Pro Softball League (WPSL). On a day when Myers belted her first career homer, drove in two runs and scored three times in a Ragin’ Cajun doubleheader sweep of Bradley and Syracuse, the freshman from Petal, Miss. barely cracked a smile when talking about her day. “I think my expectations were a little higher than I did,” Myers said. “For the team, you always want to do good. Nobody wants to go 1-for-4 or 2-for-5. Everybody wants to win every pitch.” That fits perfectly with the mindset of the Ragin’ Cajun softball program. And so far, that mentality has paid off as the No. 23 Cajuns upped their record to 3-0 on Saturday with two more wins in the 24th annual Louisiana Classics Tournament at Alfred and Helen Lamson Park. The Cajuns beat Bradley, 8-0, in the first game before cruising past Syracuse, 9-0, in the second game. Myers belted a two-run homer in the first game to help the Cajuns (3-0) roll past Bradley (3-1). Gabby Bridges also ripped a solo shot in the game as the Cajuns pounded out 13 hits. Brittany Cuevas (1-0) was solid in the circle for UL, pitching all seven innings and giving up only three hits while striking out 11 and walking one. In the Cajuns’ second game of the day, Christi Orgeron blasted her third homer of the season as the Cajuns rolled past Syracuse, 9-0. Melissa Verde also went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Vallie Gaspard continued to swing a hot bat as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Through the first three games, the Cajuns have racked up 35 hits and have outscored their opponents by a 33-0 margin. Donna Bourgeois picked up her second win of the season by striking out 10 batters, walking one and giving up only three hits in the complete game. “Everybody’s just doing their job,” Bourgeois said. “That’s what a team is all about. This team is doing a really good job of executing that — defensively, offensively. It’s awesome, I love being out there with my team.” Just like in Friday’s opener, the Cajuns showcased their depth on Saturday as 21 players saw action against Bradley and 16 against Syracuse. Like Myers, most of those players were true freshmen making their college softball debut. “I just think that through the scrimmages, the intersquads, some of the things that we’ve seen, they’ve proven their abilities,” UL coach Stefni Lotief said. “They’ve proven that they’re very capable. “If I was a pitcher, I’d love to play with that defense behind me. They play incredibly hard. Mistakes are going to happen, but if the intensity is there and the effort is there, you can live with it.” The Cajuns will close out the Louisiana Classics today with another doubleheader. The Cajuns will play Bradley at 11 a.m. followed by a 1:30 p.m. game against Syracuse. “I just can’t even say enough about the fact about how incredibly hard this group practices,” Lotief said. “I think they’re all committed to the same common goals. They’ve done a lot of team-building, they’ve spent a lot of time together. They trust each other and I htink if you have a team that trusts each other, all share that same pitch, all pull on the same rope, I think you’ve got a good combination. “I think the ofense has been tremendous. It brings a different look. I’m just so pleased with the way they’ve been able to make adjustments. I think you have a lot of young kids who will have the abiilty to grow. It was a good day today for the Cajuns.”
