Football: Cajuns Q&A: Junior DE Nate Douglas

Joshua Parrott • jparrot@theadvertiser.com • March 25, 2010

One of the most interesting storylines to emerge during spring drills for UL’s football team has been the return of junior Nate Douglas.

Coming off a strong 2008 season in which he had three sacks, six tackles for loss and 26 tackles, the athletic defensive end missed last year after not getting cleared medically due to seizures.

The Milton, Fla., native got that issue under control and was cleared in time to participate in spring drills. Going into the final week of spring practice, Douglas had moved to the top of the depth chart at rush end.

Douglas took some time after a recent practice to answer some questions from The Daily Advertiser about football, life and other issues.

Question: How difficult was it to sit out last season after not getting cleared medically due to seizures ?

Answer: I was really disappointed, just like anyone else would be. I got the chance to come out here again, so I’m going to take full advantage of that. I’m sure to leave everything out on the field because you never know when your last play might be.

Q: The coaches have noticed your enthusiasm since returning to the field. What does it feel like to be back out here again?

A: I love the game and want to play the game. After not being able to play last year now I’m just trying to take full advantage of coming back out here again, being around my friends and playing football.

Q: The word perspective always comes up when people talk about health concerns. Has your situation changed your perspective at all off the field?

A: (Laughs) Oh no, I go to church all the time. I know that the good Lord is going to keep me safe.

Q: You mentioned that you’re close with your roommates (fellow Cajun football players Draylon Booker and Vernon Wolfe). What are some of your hobbies away from football?

A: I play video games and dominoes and play basketball with those guys sometimes on the weekend. I like doing those things with my roommates and teammates because I see them every day. It’s fun.

Q: So you say that Booker is the neat freak at home. Who is the sloppy roommate?

A: Oh man, I think that would be me. I take the longest to clean up.

Q: Great dreadlocks by the way. Have to admit that I’m jealous. What’s the story with the hair?

A: It’s part of the culture (back in Florida). Ever since I started growing my hair four years ago I’ve been playing well. I guess I’m kind of like Samson, who lost his power when he cut off his hair. It’s going to fall out sometime anyway, so I’m going to keep it as long as I can.

Q: What’s it going to be like to run back on the field next fall after sitting out last season?

A: It’s going to be like coming back home again. I got the same feeling when I went back home from college. I’m going to be back doing what I’m supposed to be doing.
