In the fall of 1946, this ole Yankee hopped on a train to Lafayette (from NYC via New Orleans) to play some basketball for Dutch Reinhardt for three years, graduating (summa cum laude) in 1949… having previously spent a year of college playing basketball in 1942-43 for Nat Holman at CCNY (WWII intervening).
I’ll always treasure the moment when Dutch grabbed my right hand with his nine fingers and congratulated me on becoming the first school hoopster to have made All-Conference (at Guard) for three consecutive years.
Almost as much as when I accepted his challenge to a two-hand set shooting contest and beat him 10-for-10 to 9-for-10. (On the other hand, so to speak, I had the advantage of 10 fingers to his nine.)

I then spent another two years in Louisiana, supping gumbo and getting an M.S. at LSU.
For a brief summary of my personal and professional activities covering the next half century, you can look into any recent (or past) editions of Marquis’ Who’s Who in America …in the World …in Finance and Industry …in the East.

Mort passed away on March 19, 2014. Although the AN posted a brief news story, we were unable to locate his complete obituary.
