Former Women’s Tennis: Milou Israel, ’12 & ’14 – Living Her Tennis Dream in Brussels, Belgium

The email below was sent by Milou Israel, Women’s Tennis 2008-12, on August 27, 2014 and provides wonderful information on how her life has changed since earning her MBA degree from the university in May, 2014.
I started working in June for a company called VAAV Communication in Brussels, Belgium. The company is a sponsorship and event consultancy, but they also organize big (sport) events in Belgium. One of the events is the Optima Open in the end of August in Knokke, Belgium (You can find more information on www.optimaopen.be). It’s an ATP championship tournament with tennis legends like John McEnroe, Pat Cash, Monica Seles, Kim Clijsters and Goran Ivanisevic. As you can imagine, it was very excited for me to be behind the scene and actually see what needs to happen to set up a big tournament like this. It’s amazing how much money and how much attention you need to pay to little details.

The Optima Open tennis tournament actually finished last week and I had an absolute blast! The tournament only last for 4 days. It was so much fun, but very very busy. Those tennis players are not easy people to take care of :)!! John McEnroe, for example, decided to change his flight about 5 times and Fabrice Santoro decided in the last minute that he wanted a ride to Paris in a Maserati instead of taking the train. So yeah, I had to cancel John’s flight(s) book a new flight and find a Maserati car to bring Santoro to Paris. Oh, I almost forgot, that we almost sold out of champagne during the second day! We ordered about 2000 bottles of champagne for 4 days and we were almost out half way through the event. Where to find 750 bottles of champagne for next day delivery? Luckily, we managed to arrange everything and we made everybody happy 🙂 I guess the VIP people like to drink a few glasses of champagne before they go watch tennis.

During the 4 day event we were totally sold out during the weekend. Unfortunately, we had some rain during the event but we managed to play all the matches. I was lucky to meet some of the players and have a talk with them. They are actually really just “normal” people, but it is still strange to be talking with Kim Clijsters, a 4-time grand slam winner. And there was a players party Saturday night where the alcohol was flowing around in this beautiful set-up venue. At the end of the night, John McEnroe and Pat Cash were both on stage playing guitar and the rest of the players were dancing next to them. I slept for about 1 hour and the next day stories were hilarious. For example, Kim Clijsters lost a shoes in the taxi 🙂 The final day was nice as Xavier Malisse, the home favorite, was able to take the title of the Optima Open 2014.

I thought I was only going to work for VAAV Communication until the end of August, but the company is very happy with me and has asked if I want to stay longer until mid-October to help with two other events. They have the Kings of Golf in the beginning of October and I have to help with a consulting job for FedEx in the Netherlands as they are interested in sponsoring a speed skating team. If the company is getting enough other projects/events they might offer me a full time contract. I will know more about that at the end of September, but I really hope I can stay as I love what I am doing!

Well enough about me! I hope Lafayette is treating everybody well. I absolutely miss everyone and it is weird not flying to Lafayette this August for the first time in 6 years!

Geaux Cajuns!
