Top basketball assistant back at alma mater

Rennie Bailey, the top assistant on head coach Robert Lee’s men’s basketball staff at UL for the past three seasons, has accepted a position as assistant coach at his alma mater Louisiana Tech.
The Monroe News-Star reported on its Web site Saturday that Bailey will join the Tech staff of new Bulldog head coach Kerry Rupp. That staff will also include two-year LSU assistant coach Nikita Johnson as an assistant and Curtis Condie, head coach at Division II Texas A&M International last year, as director of basketball operations.

Karl Malone, a former Tech standout and one of the top players in NBA history while with the Utah Jazz, will be associated with the staff in an unspecified role. Rupp has a long friendship with Malone and serves as director of Malone’s basketball camp and children’s foundation.

Rupp’s hiring was announced Friday. He replaced Keith Richard, fired by the school earlier this month.
Bailey, a veteran of 18 years of collegiate coaching, joined the UL staff prior to the 2004-05 season and helped lead the Cajuns to the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. UL slipped to 9-21 last season.

“Sometimes when you talk about change, you’re not sure what direction it’s going to go,” Bailey said. “But after speaking to Kerry and Karl a lot, I think the change is going to be a great change. Like Dorothy said, there’s no place like home.”

Bailey and Malone were teammates at Tech for three seasons.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Tech in 1985 and was head coach at Panola Junior College and an assistant at Tech, Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls State before joining the UL staff.

Rennie Bailey, a veteran of the collegiate coaching ranks for 16 years, is in his first season with the Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball program as the top assistant coach on Robert Lee’s coaching staff.

Bailey, a former head coach on the junior college level, comes to Cajun Country after a four-year stint as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas.

While with SFA, Bailey assisted head coach Danny Kaspar in rebuilding the program.

The Lumberjacks went from a 9-17 finish during the first season to 13-15 in the second and a 21-8 record in year three. The progress continued during the 2003-04 season as SFA rolled to a 21-9 record.

Bailey began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Louisiana Tech during the 1986-87 season.

After spending the 1987-88 season working part-time with Louisiana Tech, Bailey launched his full-time coaching career on the staff of Gordon Stouffer at Nicholls State University.

It was there at Nicholls that Bailey first met his current boss.

Robert Lee was a member of the Colonels basketball team when Bailey was hired. He got the opportunity to coach Lee during his junior and senior seasons.

After the 1989-90 season, Bailey returned to his alma mater when he was hired to coach on the staff of Jerry Lloyd at Louisiana Tech.

As an assistant at Tech, Bailey helped coach former first round NBA draft pick Randy White. He also coached P.J. Brown, taken late in the first round of the NBA draft by the New Jersey Nets, Brown now plays for the New Orleans Hornets

Following his stint at Louisiana Tech, Bailey moved on to Panola College in Carthage, Texas, where he served as head coach for seven seasons .

While at Panola, Bailey helped resurrect the program and establish the foundation for its current success.

He began without an assistant coach and served as the coach, tutor, manager, recruiter, bus driver, father figure, disciplinarian and whatever else was required.

Bailey later convinced the Panola administration to add an assistant coach to the staff. The efforts made an instant impact – Bailey took two of his last three Panola Junior College teams to the playoffs in Texas Eastern Conference play.

Bailey also recruited and coached numerous All-Texas Eastern Conference players during his seven years as the head coach at Panola. Seven former Panola Junior College players went on to sign with Division I schools during Bailey’s tenure.

A firm believer that academic excellence is the cornerstone of the growth and development of student athletes, Bailey guided 15 young men to their associate degrees and many of them transferred to four-year universities to complete their studies.

Bailey’s collegiate basketball career began in 1979 at Louisiana Tech University. He starred for three seasons at Tech alongside NBA great and future Hall of Famer Karl Malone and was a member of the Bulldogs first NCAA team.

Bailey is seventh on the career steals and assists lists at Louisiana Tech. In 1984, he helped lead Tech to a 26-7 regular season record, and the Southland Conference post season tournament title. Bailey was named to the SLC All-Tournament team that year along with NBA greats Karl Malone and Joe Dumars.

Bailey received his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Louisiana Tech in 1985.

He and his wife, Suzan are the parents of one son, Sterling, 13.
