Men’s Basketball: Moss expected to transfer

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, December 11, 2012

True freshman forward Matt Moss is expected to transfer from UL, a Ragin’ Cajuns spokesman said Monday night.

UL SID Brian McCann said Cajuns basketball coach Bob Marlin had not yet spoken with Moss, who did not practice with the team Sunday or Monday.

But, McCann said, “it’s his (Marlin’s) understanding that he (Moss) does want to transfer.”

Moss, McCann added, contacted UL’s NCAA compliance department and “asked for permission to ask other schools to talk to him.”

The anticipated departure is believed to be homesickness-related.

Moss is from Anacoco, where he played for Anacoco High before spending last season in North Carolina at Charis Prep, which won the 2012 prep-school national championship.

He made the decision sometime after playing two scoreless minutes for the Cajuns in the first half of UL’s 77-72 loss Saturday night at McNeese State, which is located about 80 miles from Anacoco.

Moss played that game with a broken nose sustained during practice last Friday.

The 6-foot-9, 215-pound outside-shooting big averaged 1.4 points, 0.8 rebounds and 4.3 minutes in eight games for the 3-6 Cajuns this season.

He was one of five true freshmen on the UL roster, and his absence will leave Marlin’s club with just one two players — 6-9 starting center Shawn Long and 6-7 reserve forward Cornell Barnett — who stand taller than 6-5.
