Home Phone: -- Daily Advertiser, Nov. 10, 2017 Mary Neiheisel, a longtime professor of nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, was awarded Lafayette’s 2017 Civic Cup in a ceremony Thursday at the Petroleum Club. “It’s just so incredible and unbelievable,†she said. “I was speechless. I’m deeply grateful and deeply humbled.†In her professional life, Neiheisel has been published dozens of times and holds multiple nursing licenses in Louisiana and Texas. Beyond that, she has been involved with the Zonta Club, the United Way of Acadiana, the Rotary Club, the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana, the Lafayette Public Library Foundation, Leadership Lafayette and the Woman’s Foundation, among others. A native of Texas, Neiheisel moved to Lafayette after she married. She immediately took to her new city. “I just found this such a welcoming community,†she said. “I wasn’t a Cajun, and yet they invited me to participate, and I got started with different projects and started working with so many wonderful people.†Each of the organizations and people have meant a lot to Neiheisel, but her work with Faith House has made a particular impression. “Every person I know at Faith House is inspiring to me because of their work ethic and love and caring for people,†she said. * * * * Nov. 2, 2017 – Univeristy News Services Nursing professor’s community spirit recognized with Civic Cup Dr. Mary Neiheisel, a longtime nursing professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, is the winner of this year’s Lafayette Civic Cup. The Civic Cup recognizes an honoree’s humanitarianism. The Young Men’s Business Club of Lafayette first presented the award in 1933. Today, it’s given by the Community Foundation of Acadiana. Neiheisel is the award’s 85th recipient. Her service to the community will be celebrated during ceremonies Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Lafayette Petroleum Club. She joined the University’s nursing faculty in 1966, shortly after she married Richard Neiheisel. He taught European, American and Russian histories at the University from 1962 until his death in 1987. “He is really on my mind with the Civic Cup award. He would be so delighted, so happy and proud,†Mary Neiheisel said. Civic Cup recipients are chosen by a committee of past honorees. Neiheisel’s extensive résumé of community engagement, which began shortly after her arrival in Lafayette in 1966, gave the panel a lot to consider. The late Dr. Ben Kaplan, a sociology professor at the University, and his wife Blondie “had engaged my husband in Community Concerts, and we continued the engagement after we were married,†Neiheisel remembered. “You join one group, you meet people from other groups. Soon we were members of the Fine Arts Foundation.†In the ensuing 50 years, Neiheisel joined a host of local and regional organizations dedicated to community service, children and women’s health, the arts, and literacy. A selection of her affiliations include United Way of Acadiana, Lafayette Rotary Club, Performing Arts Society of Acadiana, Acadiana Center for the Arts, Leadership Lafayette, Chorale Acadienne, Friends of the Humanities, Zonta International and Lafayette Public Library Foundation. She’s particularly proud of her work with Faith House, which named her its 2015 Employee of the Year. A certified family nurse practitioner, Neiheisel is the domestic violence crisis center’s nurse advocate. She’s also lent her medical expertise to organizations such as Shots for Tots, March of Dimes, Women’s Foundation, and the Family Violence Intervention Program. “The city means the world to me. It is definitely home, a place in which I found friends, employment, volunteer activities, arts and culture and ways to help grow our community. It is truly a city of opportunity and strong caring people.†Neiheisel began her nursing education at Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Antonio. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Incarnate Word College, also in San Antonio. She received a master’s degree in nursing education from the University of Colorado in 1965, and joined the University of Southwestern Louisiana’s nursing faculty the following year. She eventually earned a doctorate in education from LSU. She also holds adult and gerontology nurse practitioner certifications. She was one of the state’s first advanced nurse practitioners. At UL Lafayette, Neiheisel piloted the core courses for its nurse practitioner program and served as its director. She was the program’s first graduate nursing program coordinator. She was the first College of Nursing faculty member to be awarded the UL Lafayette Foundation’s Distinguished Professor Award. She won the honor in 1976. Neiheisel is a past Distinguished Scholar and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice. In 2006, she was recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the first individual from the state to receive the designation. Neiheisel joins a number of University administrators and faculty who’ve received the Civic Cup. Past honorees included: “This honor takes my breath away,†Neiheisel said. “Never in a million years did I see myself receiving this award. I knew and know several recipients and have a very special admiration for them. It is truly humbling to be on a list with these extraordinary people.†* * * * * Mary B. Neiheisel, a native of Boulder, Colorado, earned his degrees from the University of Colorado and attended the University of Texas at Austin. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Colorado his junior year and graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and immediately entered the Graduate School at the University of Colorado. He was also a member of Kappa Delta Phi, Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta honor societies. He began his academic career at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1962. Although his major was Ancient and Modern European History, Neiheisel, in addition to his courses in Modern and Ancient European History also taught American History and Russian History. Richard G. Neiheisel initiated the Neiheisel/Phi Beta Kappa award at the Phi Beta Kappa meeting in May, 1987. A plaque in Dupré Library bears the name of each annual Phi Beta Kappa recipient. In memory of her husband, Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel has continued the award since 1988. The account originated in 1988 from the contributions of friends and relatives in memory of Richard G. Neiheisel, who died December 13, 1987. In 1997, his wife established the endowed award to guarantee the recognition of outstanding students in perpetuity. In 20??, Mary established the Richard G. and Mary B. Neiheisel Dissertation award which is presented annually to a Ph. D. student in a doctoral program in Liberal Arts, Education, Sciences, or Engineering. The Richard G. Neiheisel Endowed Professorship in History is in the planning stages. Richard Neiheisel was well read and enjoyed great books as well as music, playing the piano, Broadway shows, photography, and traveling. He was a great supporter of Community Concerts, Chorale Acadienne, and the Fine Arts Association (later known as Performing Arts Society of Acadiana). Richard was a ham radio operator and assisted with communications in a number of hurricanes. On weekends he spent time ‘hamming’ with family and friends in Colorado, California, and Texas. He tutored a number of young men in the Morse Code and ham radio. Richard was the son of William and Lulu Neiheisel of Boulder, Colorado, and had four brothers and two sisters, ten nephews, six nieces and three godchildren. He was a special person and loving uncle to Russell and Rebecca Brown. He cherished and was very proud and appreciative of his extraordinary friendship with Paula B.. Gremillion, ULL, ’70. He was married to Dr. Mary B. Neiheisel, a Nursing professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, 1966-present, who held the Lafayette General Hospital Endowed Professor (1994-2000) and the Pfizer/Ardoin Endowed Professor (2000-2012) in the College of Nursing and Allied Health Professions at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and the Lafayette General Medical Center Endowed Professor in 2013-present. She joined the graduate faculty in 1988 and was appointed as the first Graduate Nursing Coordinator in the College of Nursing at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. A native of Texas, Dr. Neiheisel began her studies at Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Antonio, Texas in 1960. Her B.S. in Nursing is from Incarnate Word College, San Antonio, TX. She received an M.S. in Nursing from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1965. Her Ed.D., completed in 1981, is from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. She then completed a Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum in 1995 from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. In 2005-2007, she completed the course work in the Adult Nurse Practitioner and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner tracks from Northern Kentucky University. She piloted the core courses for the Nurse Practitioner program at ULL and served as the NP coordinator from 1996-2007. Two of Richard’s godchildren, Aimee E. Falgout-Forbes’06 and Richard J. Falgout’10 (Richie) graduated from UL, Lafayette. Aimee is married, lives in Boston and works in wholesale merchandising. Richie, (his namesake) is a Ragin Cajun attended UL, Lafayette from 2006-2010 and has one son, Aiden. His third godchild, Rachel Falgout Lokitz, completed her studies at Millsaps College and her law degree at University of Tennessee-Knoxville, and has two children, Leah and Robert.
