Bourg, Ph.D. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Martin S. “Marty” Bourg Funeral services will be held Tuesday at a 8:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in the St. Mary Catholic Church for Dr. Martin S. Bourg, Ph.D., age 50, who died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1992, at 10:20 a.m. at his residence in Lafayette. Interment will be in the Fountain Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Monsignor Robert C. Angelle, Pastor, St. Mary Catholk Church, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the Services. Survivors include: his wife, the former Claire Naquin of Lafayette; two daughters, Gretchin E. Bourg of Virginia Beach, Va. and Stefanie E. Andrepont of Monroe; one son, M. Scott Bourg Jr., of Lafayette; one grandchild, Shelbi Ann Bourg; and one brother. He was preceded in death by his parents. A native of Lockport and a resident of Lafayette since 1973, Dr. Bourg was the son of the late Edwin W. Bourg and the former Edna Martin, both Lockport natives. Dr. Bourg received his B.S. from U.S.L., M.Ed, from the University of Southern Mississippi and his Ph.D. from Florida State University. At the time of his death, he was associate professor of Health and Physical Education at U.S.L. Dr. Bourg’s university service included advisor and coordinator of several programs at U.S.L. including being a member of the Faculty Senate and Alumni Homecoming Committee. Dr. Bourg also served on numerous departmental, College of Education and University committees. His professional organizations included Louisiana Assoc. of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance where he was President from 1982-83 and held six other major offices. He was their 1986 Honor Award recipient. Dr. Bourg was also a member of the southern district of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; Louisiana Association of Higher Education; Phi Epsilon Kappa; Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society; United States and Louisiana Tennis Assoc.; and Louisiana Teachers Assoc. Dr. Bourg had publications published in national journals and in over two dozen state journals and has made over 30 presentations at local, state and district meetings. A dedicated member to our community, Dr. Bourg was a member of various organizations which included Louisiana and Lafayette American Heart Association; Heart Association Board of Directors; Heart Festival Committee; State Jump Rope for Heart Task Force and area JRfH Coordinator and was honored on three occasions by the American Heart Assoc. for outstanding contributions for the fight against heart disease. He was a leader in Webelos, Cub and Boy Scouts; volunteer for Special Olympics; charter member of U.S.L. Civitan Club and was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Community where he coordinated family tennis events. Dr. Bourg was a member of the Curriculum Revisions Committee for local school systems and State Dept. of Education. He was active in directing tennis tournaments in our city and was a member of the United States Tennis Assoc. and was on the board of directors of Acadiana Tennis League. A Rosary will be recited today at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Visiting hours will be observed today at the funeral home from 3-9 p.m.; and on Tuesday at the St. Mary Catholic Church from 7 a.m. until time of Services. Memorial contributions in Dr. Bourg’s name may be made to the Marty Bourg Memorial Fund, co Dr. Ed Dugas, U.S.L., P.O. Box 43755, Lafayette, La. 70504. Cindy P. Landry | Micro Information Systems Specialist 1 * * * * * * * Marty is remembered for his intelligence, his thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity. His friends never had a negative word to say about him or his values. Marty, Ed Dugas, Clyde Wolf and I were close friends. We spent much free time together, playing cards, fishing, or just talking of “old timesâ€. He had a great sense of humor and could pull one on you if you were not on your guard, all in fun. Destiny took his life far to soon. This left a void in our lives which could not be filled. We still speak of him often, always with good memories being the main topic. He lived his life with dignity and pride, setting an * * * * * * * Fond Memories of Marty by Ed Dugas. Marty was a friend since our undergraduate days at USL. He had a heart of gold and was a true servant of the community. Involved in many community activities, he always fostered worthwhile programs to improve the lives of others, especially those less-fortunate. At the end of each semester, we always tried to round up a few people to have our fishing rodeos. Many times, there were only four of us – Fred (Erik) Nelson and I took on Marty and Clyde Wolf – having fun with many types of competition. Once in Grand Isle, we disqualified one of his red fish, which would have broken a tie. The fish had only one eye and the usual location of the other eye, was scaled over. The winner of the rodeo presented a prize to the loser – which was usually a joke. In this case, the loser had to display (prominently in their office) an old bowling trophy which Harold Blackwell had picked up in a trash pile on the side of the road. Marty made a significant professional contribution by dedicating himself to promoting Jump Rope for Heart in the area and the state. Thus, he was able to promote his profession while assisting the American Heart Association. For years, a tennis tournament was held in Lafayette to honor him with proceeds going to the American Heart Association. While on the USL faculty, he was always involved in a leadership role with the Alumni Association Tennis Tournament and the Lafayette Parish Teachers Tennis Tournament. A problem-solving professional, he was always willing to do whatever it took to solve the many challenges in our department as we were using several on-campus sites and seven off-campus sites to keep our program on life-support until the new HPE building (now Bourgeois Hall), could be occupied in the 1986. Marty stood out as a person who was a giver, and never one to hesitate having to move out of his comfort zone to help accomplish worthy goals for others, the university or his profession.
