His obituary, provided by teammate Randy Price, is included below his Living Memorial. Updated Aug. 31, 2017 by Dr. Ed Dugas. Basketball Team Member, 1955-1959 Married Janice Smith from Sabinal, Texas in 1962. Children – four daughters – Sally, Susan, Rebecca & Mary — nine grandchildren. I came to SLI during the Dutch Reinhardt era in 1955 from Jena, Louisiana. Notable high school game, state championship in 1955 playing against Jack Moreland later an NBA player. Moreland was held to 39 points in that game. The years I attended SLI were some of the most enjoyable times of my life and my memories are great. I recently spent time with Randy Price and he reminded me of a particular incident with Coach Shipley’s famous whistle drill. I had come down with the flu and made the mistake of coming back to practice the next day. It seemed that Coach did not recognize the after-effects of the flu and the whistle drill was in order for everyone, including me. That day was nearly my demise. Randy Price and I have laughed about that incident many times over the years. I recieved a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from SLI in 1960, and after a short stint in the U.S. Army, moved to Houston, Texas. Most of my working career was spent with Transco Energy Company in the Houston area. I work out fairly consistently and play a few hoops with my 12 year grandson, mostly Horse games. I am looking forward to the reunion with you guys and seeing Coach Shipley. * * * * * Marion Wells (Stew) Stewart of Sugar Land passed away on November 28,2011 after fighting a courageous battle with Frontotemporal Degeneration. He was born September 19, 1937 to Rev. Herman Stewart and Alberta Broussard Stewart in Calhoun County, Mississippi . His first 11 years were happily spent on Pecan Island, Louisiana among a host of well-loved relatives. In 1948, the family moved to Jena, Louisiana where he graduated from high school. He excelled in academics and athletics and earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. He graduated in 1960 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering . In 1961, Stew moved to Houston to begin a long career with Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Corp. (Transco). He held positions in engineering design and development. In 1987, he received Transco’s Award of Excellence. He joined American National Power in 1993 as Director of Project Development and continued there until retirement. Shortly after moving to Houston, he met Janice Smith and they were married January 20, 1962. They were blessed with 4 daughters and 12 grandchildren. Stew was a family man, devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was involved in his girls’ activities, serving as PTA President and as coach and President of Southwest Houston Girls Softball Association. He loved sports as a participant and as a fan. Stew loved to travel and some of his fondest memories were times spent on many family vacations with his children and grandchildren. Stew and Janice enjoyed many trips all over the world including a recent trip to Israel. Stew will be most remembered by his friends and family for his steadfast character, love for life, kind heart and sweet gentle spirit. He is survived by his wife, Janice, daughters and their husbands: Sally and Gerard White, Sugar Land; Susan and Mike Williamson, Austin; Rebecca and Robby Byers, Sugar Land; and Mary and Bill Moll, Houston. Grandchildren: Taylor and Katie White; Drew, Reid, Caroline and Ryan Williamson; Brittany, Fisher and Briley Byers; Elizabeth, William and Thomas Moll; sister and brother in law, Lynell and Ed Buckley, Ruston ,Louisiana. He will be missed by a host of friends and dear longtime caregiver, Diana Walton. A Memorial service will be held at Sugar Land Baptist Church, 16755 Southwest Frwy at Sweetwater Blvd on Wednesday, November 30 at 2pm. with Dr. Phil Lineberger officiating. Graveside services will be held at Jones Cemetary in Utopia, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be given to Houston Hospice at 1905 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, Texas 77030-4123 or Pine Cove Christian Camps, P.O. Box 9055, Tyler, Texas 75711.
