SOUTHWESTERN MEMORIES

Derwood Duke was recruited by Coach Reinhardt from the hills of Shongaloo in 1954; I followed in 1955. We swapped potatoes and steak for crawfish and rice – it took a while. The year that Coach Shipley came, I blew a knee in training camp which ended my playing days; although I had successful surgery sixteen years later, I don’t think my footwork was any better than before my injury!

The real players started showing up after I was sidelined: Howard Humphries, Tim Thompson, Don Church and Bill McHorris. It was at that time that I saw what Coach Shipley wanted done with a basketball!

Coach Shipley taught me the relationship between winning and playing with passion. He is passion personified! Self discipline, passion and perseverance are invincible foes and he championed all of them.

Organizing the Dallas Mavericks gave me the opportunity to enjoy the game vicariously for sixteen years; we sold the Club in 1996 to Ross Perot, Jr. Now the new owner, Mark Cuban, is taking the team back to its glory days.

I am disappointed that the game has become one of contact, physical strength and intimidation – that is a far cry from speed, skill and good sportsmanship that use to dominate the game. Times change things, but not always for the good.

I work out four or five times a week, but no round ball unless it is playing horse with my grandsons! My son-in-law, David Piehler, the varsity basketball coach for Highland Park, was inducted in Kansas State High School Hall of Fame, was All Southwest Conference playing for SMU and played for a while with the Dallas Mavs (wish I had known then he was going to be my son-in-law). One grandson playing hockey for Bethel University, St. Paul.

I wish to acknowledge with supreme gratitude some people at Southwestern in addition to Coach Shipley who made my tenure a life time treasure. Dean Herbert Hamilton for convincing me that I should pursue law school and not geology; President Joel L. Fletcher who appointed me as his personal representative to the Student Council and someway obtained a scholarship for me to attend Tulane Law School; Dean Glynn Abel who demonstrated how a great athlete could also be a great administrator and leader; my dear friend Assistant Dean of Men who was an encourager and wonderful leader working with me in Blue Key and as a Proctor in the men’s dorm; and Dr. Perry Sanders for his guidance and positive relationship with so many of us at Southwestern. My relatives, the Morgans, Mackeys and Martins who made me feel so much at home in Lafayette. I will forever be grateful and indebted to my parents, M.D. and Eulyne Adkins, for their sacrifices, love, encouragement and support – Dad made it to age 96 and Mom to within two weeks of 101!

The Lord has truly blessed me and my family with the inspiration and wonderful education I received at ULL. What a supporting cast!
Allons Bulldogs!

GOD BLESS DR. ED DUGAS FOR HIS PRICELESS AND UNSELFISH COVERAGE OF ULL ATHLETICS
