The 1988 team won the American South Conference Tournament title to advance to its first regional under first-year coach Mike Boulanger. Former Cajun baseball players Lionel Kleinpeter and Leonard Kleinpeter threw out Saturday’s first pitch. Lionel Kleinpeter was named a second team NAIA all-American as an outfielder in 1964, becoming the first UL player to earn such honors. He hit .418 that year, which is still the best single-season mark in school history. He also earned all-Gulf States Conference recognition in 1963 and ’64. Leonard Kleinpeter was a second team all-Gulf States selection as a utility player in 1963 and a first team all-league pick as an outfielder in ’64. He was later inducted into the school’s S-Club Hall of Fame. “I played here, and I think as long as I’m here Alumni Weekend will always be important to me,” said UL coach Tony Robichaux. “This weekend is a great chance for our current players to spend some time with our former players. “The more they talk with them, the more they’ll learn to value their time here because it passes by so fast.” Odds and Ends After UL’s loss to USA on Friday, the Jaguars extended their lead in the series to 48-31. Even with the loss, the Cajuns have won 22 of the past 35 meetings, including nine of 11 … USA coach Steve Kittrell needs 19 more victories to get 1,000 in his career with the Jaguars. He reached the 1,000-win mark earlier this season, becoming only the 50th coach in NCAA history to hit that plateau … UL center fielder Kyle Olasin was not in Saturday’s lineup. Since getting his batting average up to .362 on April 1, he has gone 10-for-44 (.227) in the past 11 games.
