Lauretta Fluitt Obituary

auretta was born in Elton, LA to Bessie Laflauer Savoie and Henry Edward Savoie on September 7, 1930. After graduating from Elton High School, Lauretta attended USL (Southwestern LA Institute). Lauretta left USL to start her life’s journey to teach school in De Quincy in 1952. While there, she met a local lad who was home on leave from the Navy (Fred Fluitt). They were married June 12, 1955 and settled in De Quincy. Out of this union came a son Fred B. (Rusty) Fluitt III and daughter Teresa (Tressie) Fluitt.
In De Quincy, Lauretta became active in the community. She was an elementary school teacher for many years and loved her students. She was an active member of Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church, including the Altar Society, Divine Mercy and Eucharistic Minister. She was also a member of the De Quincy Federated Women’s League. When the League, along with the city, purchased the KCS Railroad Depot, Lauretta participated in creating the De Quincy Railroad Museum from its inception, where she served as treasurer for many years. She had a passion for the museum and a love for the city of De Quincy.
Lauretta was a former member of the Sierra Club of Lake Charles, the De Quincy Garden Club, the De Quincy Historical Society and The Military Order of St. Lazarus. She was a Lady Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, Honorary member of the Pontifical Knights of the Diocese of Lake Charles, Companions of Honor and had received the Order of St. Charles from Bishop Provost.
Lauretta was preceded in death by her mother and father; sisters Jeanette DeJean, Jackie DeJean, Mollie Ann Savoie and one brother Berchman Savoie.
Lauretta is survived by her loving husband, Fred Fluitt Jr.; son Fred B. (Rusty) Fluitt of De Quincy and his fiancé Suzanne Schafer of League City, Texas; daughter, Teresa (Tressie) Kinney and husband Lee of Sulphur LA; grandson Clint Kinney of Palm Beach FL, granddaughter Kaylee Kinney of Sulphur LA, sister Bonnie David and her husband Rudy Porter of Lake Charles, sister and brother in law Jack and Maryann Fluitt of DeSoto Tx, numerous nieces and nephews.
Lauretta was a joy to be around and loved by all. She was a strong woman and her spirit will remain with us always. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 3:00pm until 10:00pm with an Evening Rosary at Hixson Snider Funeral Home Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in DeQuincy on Monday June 9, 2014 at 10:00am. with Father Ed Brunnert M.S. officiating. Burial will follow in Perkins Cemetery.
