Football: Coleman Takes Charge

August 11, 2006 –

Louisiana Ragin’ Cajun offensive line coach Ron Hudson said that the competition at guard is still wide open, but right now Lanier Coleman is the guy in the cross-hairs … the one everybody’s watching … the big question mark.
Coleman, a sophomore from New Orleans and Brother Martin High, was going to battle with Cecilia’s Will Chance for starting time at right guard. That was before Chance, who played in 10 games last year at the spot, went down with an ankle injury before fall practice even began.

“I guarantee you that Lanier was hurt by that,” Hudson said of Chance’s injury. “He’s going to get more of a chance to play, but when he heard that Will was hurt that never crossed his mind. He’s hurt that Will’s not out here.”

Coleman, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship, played in five games last year including 18 snaps against eventual national champion Texas. He was among the front line’s surprises during spring drills.
“I was looking forward to a battle,” Coleman said, “and that’s still the way I’m looking at it. It’s not my spot yet at all. I still feel like I have to work for it and earn it.”

Coleman said he’s been helped by the other members of a veteran starting offensive line, but motivational help has come from nightly phone conversations with Chance. The Cecilia High graduate had two screws put into his ankle Tuesday in what was termed successful surgery.

“I talk to him every night,” Coleman said. “He makes sure I’m doing the right thing and preparing myself the right way. He makes things a lot easier.

“The day we heard about Will, Brandon (All-Sun Belt tackle Brandon Cox) grabbed me around the shoulder and told me that I knew my stuff and I just had to do it. He’s been a big brother for me, and he’s the one that told us we couldn’t let down with Will not here.”

“That says something for all those kids,” Hudson said. “We’ll miss Will’s leadership and drive, but there’s several guys that are going to be there in the mix and will compete. They understand that nothing’s set in stone.”

Things have a way of changing once full-contact drills begin. For UL, that comes in this morning’s 8 a.m. practice.

“That’s what the O-line lives for,” Coleman said. “We love to get banging. We’re ready to get into that middle drill and get after it.”

NEW LEVELS: Today’s first full-contact session follows two days in shorts and two days in shoulder pads and shorts, and head coach Rickey Bustle said he’s looking forward to the middle drills that spotlight offensive and defensive line confrontations.
“You get to do things full speed,” Bustle said of donning full pads for the first time. “We’ll be live blocking and tackling and taking people to the ground in middle drill. When we do team we’ll stay on our feet, but in middle drill the mind-set changes.”

Middle drill often becomes a practice-stopper, with players from other positions sneaking more than a peek at the competition between the big guys.

“I like it myself,” Bustle said. “It turns things up another notch. For the younger guys, it’ll be the first one they’ve been in, and you want to see how they react.”

TEAM DRILLS:The Cajuns ran nine plays in an 11-on-11 drill at the end of practice, with that session the closest to full contact so far in fall camp. During that session of first-and-10 plays, Jerry Babb hit tight end Kevin Belton for a first down, Connor Morel did the same with Philip Nevels and redshirt running back Deon Wallace took an option handoff for another first down.
Defensively, strong safety Johnny Felders picked a tip-drill interception out of the air for the second straight day, and cornerback Michael Adams had a strong breakup of another pass attempt.

The Cajuns’ placement unit capped that drill on a high note, going five-for-five on field goal tries. Drew Edmiston and St. Thomas More freshman Tyler Albrecht each hit from 37 yards, and Edmiston, Albrecht and walk-on Stokka Brown of Catholic-New Iberia were all successful from 47 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Jonathon Vance of New Orleans-West Jefferson, who played in 10 games last season, missed part of drills with a sore hamstring but was expected back at full speed today. Walk-on running back Matt Dupre was also limited with a sore shoulder.

Offensive lineman Brad Bustle of Lafayette High was back at full speed Thursday after going through further medical tests, and offensive guard Chris Fisher of St. Thomas More and defensive tackle Travis Ferguson of Dallas both shed the green jerseys after being limited in Wednesday’s sessions.

NUMBERS: Thursday’s shoulder pads and shorts session went almost exactly two hours after an 8:15 first period whistle. Temperature at mid-practice was 88 degrees with 56 percent humidity, providing a heat index of 93 degrees.

LAGNIAPPE: Offensive lineman Nasser Jamal of Vancouver, British Columbia, is in camp and working out with the team. He was the last member of UL’s recruiting class to arrive after a late end to his school term in Canada … Both Babb and Michael Desormeaux, UL’s one-two punch at quarterback, had solid throwing days Thursday, one day before full-contact drills.
