Green Honored

For the second consecutive week, UL junior Ladarius Green was a finalist for the John Mackey Tight End of the Week award.

Green made seven catches for 97 yards and a touchdown in last week’s win over Arkansas State.

Notre Dame junior Kyle Rudolph won the honor this week after catching eight passes for 164 yards and one TD, a 95-yard score in a loss to Michigan.

Florida Atlantic’s Rob Housler and Green were also considered for the award. Green, a member of the John Mackey Award preseason watch list, won the weekly award last season.

Football: Green delivers message

Joshua Parrott • jparrott@theadvertiser.com • September 15, 2010

In UL’s 31-24 win Saturday over Arkansas State, Ladarius Green showed once again why he’s considered to be one of the nation’s top tight ends.

The athletic 6-foot-6 junior caught a game-high seven passes for 97 yards, including a six-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Green also contributed as a blocker to help the Ragin’ Cajuns rush for 242 yards — the program’s highest total since 2008.

Green’s receiving and blocking skills landed him on the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s top tight end. He was a midseason addition to the award’s watch list last season.

“He’s a playmaker,” UL quarterback Chris Masson said. “I think he is the best tight end in the country. I don’t think there is another tight end out there that has the talent that he has. He brings his A-game every time.”

As usual, Green was at his best when the Cajuns needed him the most against the Red Wolves.

Six of his seven catches produced a first down. Three of those receptions came on third down. Green was named an honorable mention selection for the CollegeFootballPerformance.com National Tight End of the Week award and was a runner-up for LSWA Offensive Player of the Week honors.

On a number of his catches last week, Green out-jumped multiple defenders to get the ball — something he did quite often when going for rebounds as a former prep basketball standout in Pensacola, Fla.

“It doesn’t really matter to me (how I get the ball),” said Green, who had a basketball scholarship offer from Tulane during his prep days. “When they put me out there and throw it up to me, that shows me that Chris has faith in me and that the coaches have the faith in me to go make a play.”

UL coach Rickey Bustle said Masson and Green work on those pass plays every week in practice.

“We’re always trying to find some mismatches for him,” Bustle said. “We want him to go up and get it.”

UL’s season opened with a 55-7 loss at Georgia on Sept. 5, but Green made four catches for 87 yards against the Bulldogs. His 60-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter provided the only points for the Cajuns in the loss as Green was named a finalist for the John Mackey Tight End of the Week award.

On the season, Green has 11 catches for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He is second nationally among tight ends in receiving yards behind Notre Dame’s Kyle Rudolph (207 yards) and third in receptions after Missouri’s Michael Egnew (16 catches) and Rudolph (13 catches).

Green is 27th in the country in receiving yards, 28th in receiving yards per game (92) and 42nd in total receptions.

The numbers show just how vital Green is for the Cajun offense.

So far this season Green has accounted for 40 percent of UL’s touchdowns (two of five), 44 percent of its total receptions (11 of 25) and 56 percent of its receiving yards (184 of 328). He is on pace to easily surpass his sophomore season (32 catches for 533 yards and two TDs) in which he was second-team all-conference despite missing three games due to injury.

For his career, Green has 65 catches for 985 yards and nine touchdowns — all school records for a tight end. Green is also rated the No. 13 tight end in the 2012 NFL draft class by NFLDraftScout.com, although he is eligible for the 2011 draft.

The widespread hope is that Green continues to add to his receiving numbers as a senior for the Cajuns in 2011.

“It’s important for a quarterback to have somebody that they know can just go and get a ball,” Bustle said. “Our other receivers need to make some plays, and we’re going to give them a chance to. But Chris has a lot of confidence in Ladarius. He gives us all a lot of confidence.”

Louisiana’s Ladarius Green was named the John Mackey Tight End of the Week by the Nassau County Sports Commission on Wednesday. The Cajuns sophomore recorded five receptions for 119 yards and a career-best two receiving touchdowns in UL’s season finale vs. Troy.
Green also boasted five knockdowns in the game, in addition to making the longest reception in the Sun Belt Conference this season (91-yard touchdown) – it was the third longest reception in school history and fourth longest in SBC history.

The news comes on the heels of Green being named to the All-Sun Belt football team. On the season, the six-foot-six tight end led the Cajuns in receiving yards, despite missing three games due to injury. He ranked third in the Sun Belt in receiving yards per game. Green made 18 receptions in five conference games, boasting 19.3 yards per catch and 69.4 yards per game, ranking third in yards-per-game and third in yards-per-catch among all receivers in the SBC.

Green was a mid-season addition to the 2009 Mackey Award Watch List.

The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. This weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by Tight Ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgment does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process. The Nassau County Sports Commission, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization created to enhance quality of life of Nassau County residents through sports, is responsible for the administration of the John Mackey Award and the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.
