The university has made no announcement and Cajun coach Rickey Bustle was unavailable for comment Friday evening. But Fouquier said he resigned at FIU earlier this week and would be at work at UL’s athletic complex on Wednesday. “I’m headed that way,” Fouquier said Friday evening. “My wife and kids are ecstatic. They haven’t been this happy on a move since we’ve been married. I’ve been a bunch of different places and there’s nothing like it anywhere else. I’m excited about getting back.” Despite FIU’s 0-12 record last year, Fouquier’s defense ranked 27th nationally in total defense and led the Sun Belt Conference. FIU ranked fourth nationally in pass defense and led the nation in tackles for losses. New FIU coach Mario Cristobal, hired in December after Don Strock resigned, had retained Fouquier on his staff. Fouquier said he resigned Tuesday after accepting the UL post. “Both Pete (FIU athletic director Pete Garcia) and Mario wanted me to stay, and I appreciated that,” Fouquier said. “I kind of felt like a recruit with a couple of offers, but this is the first time in 21 years of coaching that I get to go back home to my alma mater.” Fouquier said he barely knew Bustle before his pre-Christmas interview, but he quickly heard about Bustle’s release of four coaches – offensive coordinator Rob Christophel, defensive coordinator Brent Pry, wide receivers coach Brian Crist and cornerbacks coach Terry Sims – through the coaching “grapevine” after the Cajuns’ 6-6 season. “I didn’t even know at first who it was that left,” Fouquier said. “I inquired, called him and had a couple of other people call.” Fouquier was Middle Tennessee’s assistant head coach, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator his last three years with the Blue Raiders from 2003-05 before moving to FIU. He worked with Cajun tight ends and the offensive line before getting his degree in 1989. “My mom’s still in Franklin. My sister’s there, and my brother has a house in Lafayette,” Fouquier said. “That was the main thing: Coming back home.” Originally published Jan. 5, 2007
