Sunbelt XC coach of the year one of those years, had numerous freshman of the year awards, all sunbelt conference, academic all American XC team during my tenure as coach. Our athletes broke almost all UL distance records ! It was awesome! I’ve been blessed to be at Teurlings since 2016! We’ve had numerous all state performers, state champions, all state performers: most notably Lexi Guidry and Tyler Alcorn. * * * * * * … After being displaced from Lafayette High in 2010, I have been fortunate enough to return to the blessed grounds of the Academy at Sacred Heart for 2011 and on! There is no place like home! Former Track: LaMaison returns to Lafayette High Eric Narcisse GRAND COTEAU – The turnover at Academy of Sacred Heart of Grand Coteau continued on Tuesday, when head cross country and track and field coach Kelly LaMaison resigned her position to take on another challenge. “This was definitely one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make and that’s because I became so close to these girls and the entire family at Sacred Heart,” LaMaison said. “It was really hard to do, but personally and professionally – it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.” By accepting the job with the Lions, LaMaison returns to school where it all began for her. Location also played a role in LaMaison’s decision to leave the ASH family. “I live in Youngsville,” LaMaison said. “So, every morning I had a good 40 minute drive to Grand Coteau every day. So, it’s definitely a lot closer too home for me.” Although she is leaving the Firebirds, LaMaison stated it wasn’t something she was looking to do. “I didn’t go out looking for another job,” LaMaison said. “Lafayette High called me and made a definitive offer. The offer was exactly what I was looking for.” With a bigger school, LaMaison relishes the thought of having more kids to choose from. “It’s going to be a little different,” LaMaison said. “It’s a bigger school, so hopefully I’ll have more kids to come out for the distance program. When I first arrived at ASH, I had one kid – Simone Domingue. Now, I’m leaving over 30 kids.” LaMaison is thrilled about the opportunity to help the Lions develop a solid distance program. “There is a lot of potential at Lafayette High,” LaMaison said. “There are good kids who are very energetic. I’m definitely looking forward to the new challenge.” Originally posted June 6, 2007 – – – – – – – – – Track/Cross Country: Kelly Brown-La Maison Coach of the Year Domingue, Chautin steal show Sometimes, you just know. “I saw her running the spring before I was hired, actually,” La Maison recalled. “I said, ‘Wow.’ Then we first started running together, and we’re still training partners.” The two remain linked at ASH, as well as on the Advertiser-CocaCola All-Acadiana Team selected by area coaches – LaMaison as Girls Coach of the Year and Domingue as the Outstanding Female Performer. “She has the ability to transition to different phases of running.” Domingue’s best three-mile time was 17:56 at the ASH Classic, but she also excelled on more hilly courses as the three-time St. Landry Parish and District 7-2A champion who won eight of nine meets in 2006. She had the fastest 5K (3.1 miles) and three-mile times in the state and was an all-state performer who finished fourth despite illness at a muddy LHSAA State Meet in Natchitoches. “State was very disappointing,” Domingue said. “I don’t think I showed my abilities. But, you take it as a learning experience. You get over it and come back stronger. The year was very enjoyable. We had a great team, and it was a lot of fun.” “She’s had interest from all over,” La Maison said. “I sent out a ton of resumes, and a lot of schools have contacted her.” “I’m probably a 5,000, 10,000-meter person in college,” Domingue said. “I’m more suited for the longer distances.” Foes won’t disagree. Beau Chene’s runner-up state finish in Class 4A earned Myran Chautin the All-Acadiana Boys Coach of the Year nod, while Richie Chautin was Outstanding Male Performer. “The season, in general, was good,” Myran Chautin said. “We knew early we were conditioning Richie for state. We brought his level of training up a notch, and the team agreed and followed suit. “We went out to compete every meet. We wanted to collect trophies, and we ended up with five firsts and a second.” That second place came at state, when sloppy conditions doomed the Gators. “The mud was terrible,” Richie Chautin said. “That, and me getting sick two weeks before. I was trying to get over that, and still trying to get my runs in. A dry course might have been a lot different for us.” “It was tough, hard,” Myran Chautin said. “But, second wasn’t all that bad.” Richie Chautin’s best time of 15:25 was also achieved at the ASH meet, and he was also the Parish and District champion. He was an all-state performer and is a four-time All-Acadiana choice. “I was satisfied with what I did,” he said. “There’s still room for improvement. I pushed myself. Originally published Dec. 7, 2006 Cross Country: Kelly Brown LaMaison Coaching ASH November 08, 2005 – Bruce Brown Kelly Brown-La Maison is thoroughly enjoying this cross country season, and pint-sized dynamo Simone Domingue is a big reason why. Brown-La Maison, who as Kelly Brown competed for Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun track and field program, is in her first year as cross country coach at the Academy of Sacred Heart at Grand Coteau. Domingue, whose victory at last Saturday’s All-Acadiana Meet was her second of the week and fifth of the campaign, is the chief building block for a budding program. “I’ve been really blessed in my first year at Sacred Heart,” Brown-La Maison said. “When I took over, Simone was the only runner on the team. There are 15 now, and I couldn’t ask for a better role model. “Training-wise, she’s an animal. She’s all guts, never complains.” “Kelly is out there all the time, and she really pushes me,” Domingue said. “She has such a good attitude about it. She believed in me.” Domingue led the pack in last Tuesday’s St. Landry Parish Meet, four days before doing the same in the All-Acadiana. “To be honest, the St. Landry was supposed to be more of a tempo run,” Domingue said. “But I didn’t run it like that. I was pretty much all-out. It’s hard for me to slow down. “There are special times when you train through a meet, especially when you have more than one in a week.” “Besides Simone, all of our runners are in their first year,” Brown-La Maison said. “The process took time. We had to take baby steps to finish a race. But, every one of them has gotten better. We have one girl who has improved her time by 10 minutes since the beginning of the year. That’s heart-warming. “All the kids are great. They really work hard. It’s awesome.” Domingue, who clocked a 19:49 over three miles despite warm, humid conditions on Saturday, is the measuring stick for her Firebirds teammates. “My confidence level is pretty good right now,” she said. “I’m trying to get ready for the state meet. There’s some really awesome competition in my division, and I definitely check the papers to see who’s running well.” ASH is hosting the District 6-2A Meet on Wednesday, the last step before next Tuesday’s LHSAA State Meet at Northwestern State in Natchitoches. “I was sixth as a sophomore at state,” said Domingue, who is looking to match or top that effort. “We’ll run a full team at district,” Brown-La Maison said. “Then next year I hope to take a whole team to state.” Originally published November 8, 2005 Cross Country and track, specializing in the distance events from 1998-2002.
