Tennis: Gyulai Named Head Coach of Ragin’ Cajuns Tennis Program

September 15, 2006 – John Dugas, Sports Information –

LAFAYETTE- The University of Louisiana at Lafayette announced Friday the hiring of Katalin Gyulai as head coach of Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s tennis programs. Gyulai assumes the position as head coach after serving as the associate head coach for the women’s program for the 2005-06 season.

“I am very excited about this opportunity,” Gyulai stated. “We are looking forward to building on last year’s success.

“I have high expectations for the team this year,” Gyulai added. “We finished last season ranked in both men’s and women’s and we look to improve on that this season.”

Gyulai replaces Justin McGrath, who resigned last month to take a head coaching position at Cal Poly.

Gyulai becomes the first female head men’s and women’s tennis coach in UL history. Her hiring is pending approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.

“The athletic department is very fortunate to have someone of Coach Gyulai’s ability to lead our tennis program,” stated interim Athletic Director David Walker. “Her success in leading the women’s tennis team has allowed the program to reach new heights and we know she will continue this success as a head coach.”

During her first year Gyulai led the Cajuns’ women’s team to a 14-6 record and for the first time in school history the program finished the year ranked nationally.

Gyulai arrived in Cajun Country in September 2005 and had a successful fall season. The women’s team won the University of Houston Cougar Fall Classic. Kimmie Lyles won the Flight B of the Pepsi Challenge hosted by UL. The doubles team of Tammy Day and Clemence Remy reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Regional Tournament. Day and Remy finished the fall season with a No. 8 regional doubles ranking.

She began her coaching career in the 2003-04 season as an assistant at Texas-Pan American, also teaching kinesiology classes. Her duties at UTPA included recruiting for the women’s tennis program.

In 2004-2005 Gyulai helped the UNO women’s tennis team to a 14-4 record. She coached Lucie Mazinova to All-Sun Belt honors. While in New Orleans, Gyulai worked as a teaching pro at Chateau Country Club. She was also the advanced women’s league coordinator for the New Orleans League Tennis Association.

Gyulai was a two-year letterman as a member of the University of Wyoming’s tennis team from 2001-2003. In 2003, she earned her degree in International Studies.

She was named to the Mountain West Conference Academic All-Conference teams in 2002 and 2003. She was 12-9 as a senior in singles play in the No. 1, No. 2 and No.3 singles.

Gyulai was also on University of Wyoming’s Honor Roll in 2002 and 2003 and recipient of the Cowboy Joe Athletic Club, Rendel Family Athletic Scholarship.

Prior to attending Wyoming, Gyulai graduated from Cloud County Community College. She was the Region VI singles and doubles champion in 2000 and the Region VI singles and doubles runner up in 2001.

While in Laramie, she served as a tennis instructor for two summers and also held the position of assistant tournament director for the Alpine Open Tennis Championship – a United State Tennis Association event – during 2002 and 2003.

Gyulai, a native of Transylvania, Romania, only three years removed from her playing days, still has the energy to keep up with her players.
